Spyderco vs DMT benchstones

Any opinions here on the relative quality and effectivness of Spyderco's 301 series compared to DMT's 8" benchstones?? I have a couple other DMT products and they are fine but I seem to get better results from my Sharpmaker. (sorry if this has been covered but "search" here doesn't ever seem to return results for me) Links to past discussions are most welcome.

Thanks!

I think the only DMT diamond product that would come close to the micron size of the Spyderco stone is the extra fine, everything else is much larger in size. They also make the pstes that I haven't tried, you could of course polish the edge much more with those in the finer sizes.

All the Spyderco stones, medium, fine, ultra-fine are relatively very fine and produce a high polish. I tend to use the DMT's for shaping, x-coarse then fine and finish as desired on the Spyderco benchstones. One major advantage the Spyderco benchstones have it that you have all the surfaces including the corners so they are much more versatile. DMT though has much more grits available.

If you are talking about the DMT diamond stones/plates, their grit isn't really comparable to the Spyderco ceramic stones. The only overlap may be between the DMT x-fine and the Spyderco gray. The white Spyderco ceramics are much, much finer than even the x-fine DMT. They do complement each other very well though.

ya cant beat a coarse DMT for reprofiling its kinda overkill though unless its really dull/ya are reprofiling, the fine/extra fine stones work pretty good for regular sharpening though, imho the spyderco stones are more for final polish/etc.

How does the Spyderco Ultra fine compare to the DMT ceramic? The DMT ceramic is suposed to be 7 micron what is the Spyderco ultra fine? Has anyone tryed both?

The Spyderco fine is almost exactly the same as the DMT ceramic already. The UF will be finer still.

It is very difficult to compare ceramic stones other than by the finish they leave. Spyderco stones are all sintered from the same particle size (35 microns IIRC) but they are differently sintered. Depending on the sintering conditions the effective particle size changes but there is no easy physical measurement left. This is why the gray, and white stones are only labled as medium, fine, ultra fine. Again, IIRC, the UF start out the same way as the fine but get tumbled to grade the surface finer (since they don't wear, only the surface is relevant). Apparently, this process is a lot of effort. Sal mentioned that the profit margines on the UF is so small that they only keep it in the program to please (and draw in) the "afies" (aficionados).
