I was wondering what i should do. i have a delica 4 that i got about a week and a half ago. when i got it, it had a very tight lock up. now, after minimal use ( mostly jus flicking it open and opening a few packages) it has started to develop some minor up and down blade play. i was wondering if i should try to send it in to get taken care of. also i was wondering if byrd knives are covered under the same warranty as the regular spyderco's. both my cara cara 2 and my robin 2 have up and down blade play with practically no use, even less use than the delica. the cara cara 2 is worse than the robin and the delica. or should i just not hold my standards that high for the byrd's since they are cheaper knives?

thanks for any input.

I personally wouldn't worry about it unless it's to the point where the lock fails on you. I had a Police that did that once, and I just returned it.

A little bit of flex in lockbacks is normal, so im not sure if that is what you are experiencing
If it is actually blade play, it depends on how much it bothers you to decide to send it in or not

That's why I don' flick my knives. ;)

If you mean wrist-flicking, that's more or less guaranteed to eff up the lockup on any knife sooner or later. You're hammering the fitted parts. It's sort of like putting regular fuel in your high-compression engine and stomping the accelerator because you like to listen to the engine knock. If you just mean thumb-flicking, though, the knife should stand up to that. In any case, you might consider sending them all in for service - your call and hard to tell from the other side of a computer. :)

its just so much fun to sit and flick em open i cant resist. lol

Speaking of Spyderco and their Warranty. I'm about to become the owner of a Byrd Wind as well as a Para2. Now what I was wondering about is what kind of warranty does Spyderco offer on their knives. Is it a lifetime warranty like some knife makers or is it a 1 year warranty? Just curious as I'm waiting on two knives and I'd like to know how much coverage I have from Spyderco.

If something isn't right, Spyderco will make it right. I would say that they exceed benchmade as far as warranty service.

Spyderco's have lifetime warranties but the Byrds don't carry the same warranty AFAIK. And if you're knife has a little up down play, I bet they send it back to you and say it's within spec and there's nothing they can do. As stated before, a little up/down is normal in lockbacks.

Every Spyderco lockback knife I have handled had up and down. If you flick the knife out with only enough force for the lock to engage, is that speeding up the wear? I dont ever wrist whip my knives.

ya i just flick it open with my thumb, dont ever really have to use any wrist with a spyderco lol. i just wanted to get some opinions from ppl who had some more experience with spyderco and their warranty since i just got into em within the last few months. the persistence i have has a really tight lock up still after continuous carry and being flicked open. but i guess that may have more to do with the different lock types. in my delica 4 i was thinking it might just be a matter of the lock back flexing a little bit. i guess overall i had more concern with the delica since it was a $50+ knife. the byrds i didnt pay much for at all so i guess that comes with the territory.

Exactly

It accelerates the wear on the locking surfaces, and creates play. Don't complain if it is "fun".

after owning the delica 4 for only a week and a half i dont think that should wear the lock down that fast. i say its fun to flick it open but im not constantly doing it all day. its more of my preferred way to open it for use, and maybe once in a while just to do it. and as far as my 2 byrd knives they have practically no use at all and i dont flick those ones open. the cara cara 2 is the worst out of all 3 and ive only had it a few weeks too.

Did you try tightening the pivot?

ive adjusted the pivot once or twice on the delica and that has taken out all the side to side play it developed. havent tried to adjust it to take out the up and down play, i'll see what happens tho. the cara cara2 i tried to adjust and it still has side to side as well as some up and down. i cant get it adjusted to a point where its still smooth to open but has no play.

thumb flicks shouldn't wear the lock unless you've done thousands of them. contact teir CS if it bothers you and see what they say. Or, get a new Voyager medium and you won't have the play issue in an otherwise similarly built knife.

ya the medium voyager has been on my list, but ive developed a spyderco addiction after getting my first one lol.

There is s thread on the Spyderco forum now about "Warranty Issues". Spyderco will send a knife back to the customer withouut doing anything to it bc it's

within "their tolerances". What's not ok to you might be OK to them.....go figure. Read this thread,it might give you some insight what Spyderco will and won't do as far as warrany is concerned.
