Spyderco warranty - receipt required?

I happened across an eBay auction for a Spyderco Byrd Meadowlark and the seller included this note in his auction description:

"I am a Spyderco Dealer, you must have a receipt from a authorised dealer for the warranty to be valid."

I couldn't find any mention of this on the 'Warranty' page on Spyderco's Web site. Does Spyderco really require a receipt from an authorized dealer? That sounds like it can't be correct, especially given Spyderco's reputation for outstanding customer service. However, my Spydies are so tough and reliable, I've never had to send one back to the company for service...

(I've sent knives in to Buck for service, and they didn't care about a receipt. I tried to get a knife with a bad-out-of-the-box lockback repaired by Cold Steel, and they refused because I hadn't bought from an 'authorized seller.' Enough said...)

I have twice sent knives back to Spyderco for service, didn't think to include a copy of the reciept, & they didn't ask for one after it got there. Obviously I can't speak for Spyderco, but in my experience a receipt was not required.

The warranty for the Byrd line of knives is as follows:

All byrd knives are warranted to the original owner to be free from defects in materials and workmanship for ONE year from the date of purchase. Spyderco as the importer and distributor will repair or replace, at our option, any knife returned for warranty work and found to be defective by Spyderco. Return the knife to: byrd knife, 820 Spyderco Way, Golden, CO 80403 by prepaid mail or freight with the original bill of sale, invoice, credit card receipt, gift receipt or acceptable proof of the original date of purchase from a retailer. Please include a description of the problem, physical return shipping address and contact number or email. Customer is responsible for return UPS shipping costs of $5.00 prepaid by check, money order or credit card.

This is not the same as for knives bearing the Spyderco brand name. The limitations on the warranty is one of the ways the Byrd line price is kept lower.

David,

Thanks for the info - it never occurred to me that the Byrd line would have a different warranty from regular Spyderco products, but it makes sense!
