I just recently bought a Calypso Jr. I love the knife, but the blade sits crooked in the handle by a very noticable amount, especially when closed. It's right up against one side of the handle. Would it be acceptable to send the knife in to have this fixed, or am I just being anal? It really drives me nuts, especially since I like the knife so much.

have ya tried tightening the pivot, or is the calypso pinned?

if ya arent happy send it in, w/a MO for return shipping, they'll fix it imho.

IIRC a Calypso Jr. can't be fixed and as it is discontinued it can't be replaced.
If you can use it without problems I would keep it as it is.

Blades which aren't centered when closed are apparently common in the latest run of Calypso Jr's. However, it is not a functional defect, just aesthetic. I've heard that it is an effect of the metal inserts that the clip screws fit into

Does the knife lock up tightly with a minimum of play? Is the lock reliable if "spine-whacked" If so, the best option may be to just to use it as is and accept that this problem is really only noticeable when it's hidden in your pocket.

Call or e-mail Spyderco Warranty dept. It's always best to deal direct, and not make guesses or assumptions.

I've been pleasantly surprised by their efforts to go above and beyond recently, even as I've had the highest expecations and very satisfactory experience with them in the past.

Like 4 s ter said, off center blades was a common issue on that sprint run, however, it is nothing that affects performance. He is also right about the clip screw theory. The off center blade on mine is hardly noticeable since I took the clip off. Even with an off center blade, the flat grind should enable the blade to avoid touching the inside of the handle. If it doesn’t affect performance, keep it. Spyderco won’t repair it, and they probably don’t have any to replace it with (unless they’ve recently found some). One of the forumites at the Spyderco forum sent his in (for a different reason), and he no longer has a Caly Jr. Either way, I recommend at least trying the method of inside pants pocket sans clip. You’ll be surprised how much pocket space it doesn’t take up.

That's unfortunate. It really makes the knife feel cheap to me when I look at it. It's really off-center. Maybe the burgundy version on the way will be better. I would just buy a new one, but if the problem is common, it would most likely be pointless. I'm not a fan of carrying knives without clips or sheaths. Too much digging around.

I wouldn't let it discourage you. I've always thought that a knife looked "cheap" with an off-center blade, but it shouldn't affect the performance of the Caly Jr. I understand it can give cause for apprehension, but don't be afraid to work that knife, it can take it.

Always nice to handle a knife before purchase. Nowadays the internet has changed the way we buy. I believe some online dealers will inspect the knife before shipping. Might relieve your worries to pay a bit more if necessary and find one who will look inside the box and check for your concerns.
