Spyderco Wegner v. Al Mar SERE 2000

In a very recent thread, I asked whether anybody knew about a Spydie folding knife which can be used in "abusive" conditions. I commented (or intended to) that, although the Military is a great survival folder, it might not be able to handle heavier tasks such as chopping or "light" prying due to its fine tip and its "clip-point" blade shape, which seems to be mainly suited for cutting tasks.

Here is the thread, for reference:

Some people suggested that the Spyderco Wegner is up to these tasks. I have never handled a Wegner model, yet have always been curious to do so. Still, I would like to get input from all who care to contribute. Is this knife comparable to the AL MAR SERE 2000, with its allegedly very solid lockup, tough VG-10 Spearpoint blade, excellent fit and finish, etc., for use in the tasks mentioned above and in the other thread?

Thank you,

I posted a response on the general discussion forum. I will stand by my offer though. If you get a Wegner and don't like it I will buy it from you. That is how much I believe in this knife. Just try and get a good price, and preferably plain edge

Alright. I guess I may have to give up my beloved Military for a bit and try another shot at the Wegner. What would be a good price on a new plain edge model, for me, not for you

? And give me a couple reasons why this thing will outlast my Military or M2 AFCK(besides the fact that the lock on the AFCK sucks) in the woods, and I may have to go hunting for one. I have a high adventure trip coming up in about a month, so I might give it a good work out then.

P.S. I know I gave this a less than shining review on the other forum, but it sounds like my best/only choice at the time, so I may have to reconsider my original point.

I stand by the Wegner as the best all around heavy duty use folder. Try J&M Knife Works for a good price too. email Jamie at pientinki@zoomnet.net . Jmaie's prices and service are pretty hard to beat.

It's not the pace of life that concerns me, It's the sudden stop at the end.

I have both of these knives and comparing the two, I would go with the Wegner. I love the SERE but it has 3 major faults IMHO:
1. Liner failure. I took mine apart and readjusted it and it works better now but a spine whack caused it to fail. The Wegner's liner on the other hand goes too far to the right but it doesn't seem to affect the lock at all.
2. The thumb stud is brutal on the SERE. I used my trusty dremmel tool and smoothed it out a bit but a $120 knife should not require this.
3. The spine edges are wayyyyyy too sharp for my taste when I am choking up on the knife. That will be my next "adjustment".

The Wegner requires no adjustments at all. You do the math. The Wegner is very comfortable to hold, is smooth and doesn't require my dremmel tool.
