Any chance of a Spyderco with the "wave" feature found on the Emerson Commander ?

The "Wave" is to Emerson what the "Hole" is to Spyderco.

I expect that it will largely remain exclusive to Emerson. Emerson may licence the design to some of his friends in the industry, as Spyderco lets Benchmade use the Hole for the AFCK.

There are also legality issues as well. The Wave is illegal here in Massachusettes, and probably in other places as well.

The "Wave" is illegal in Mass. Man that was fast. Was there a pre existing law that relates to opening devices on knives? Or, does Mass. have a State Attorney on the look out to outlaw anything that might remotely be considered a, dare I say it? A weapon?!?!?

Win if can, lose if you must, but always cheat.

Hi Dirk,

Actually there is a broadly worded prexisting law: "Whoever...carries on his person or under his control in a vehicle...a device or case which enables a knife with a locking blade to be drawn at a locked position...shall be punished by imprisonment for not less than two and one-half years nor more than five years in the state prison..." MGL Chpt. 269 Section 10.

I've been thinking about the spydie with wave idea and looking at my starmate.
The area forward of the starmate's thumb hole seems almost made for a wave. It's thick out front and there should be enough metal to grind in a wave. Also, the spine has that ski jump profile that should guide a wave right onto a pocket edge. Finally, the eccentric pivot would allow adjustment for the shock of waved opening.
However, I do believe that there are just as many good reasons not to have a wave as there are to. Hence, I have yet to break the dremel out.
I believe a similar idea was previously posted.

First of all, the "wave" being illegal, now that's just crazy...true, but crazy. What will it be next ?

Second, I would hold off w/ the dremel hat..Unless I'm greatly mistaken, you will need a tip-up knife for the wave. Seems if you tried to dremel a wave on a tip-down, the best you could hope for was being able to make absolutely sure it wouldn't open up while drawing it

hehe..kinda like a reverse wave, eh ?

But, why wouldn't you want the wave ? I'm beginning to think of my Commander as the holy grail of the knife world.

Mike,
If one wanted to one could probably find the hardware to mount the starmate's clip for tip up carry. Having said that, I usually don't use the clip. I find that clips tend to snag and "bye bye" knife. Also the starmate seems to have a strong ball detent, so I'm not too worried about it biting me in the pocket.
I like the wave. However, most of the time I want a more controled, less conspicuous opening. While the case can be made that one can just not use the wave in such circumstances, I have found that the wave still tends to catch on the pocket (as it's designed to) and that it is possible to accidently use a waved draw from one's pocket in the wrong circumstance. Also, the wave can catch on bulky outer garments when using a no-waved opening in cold climes.
I like my commander. I love recurves and have no problem sharpening them. I love the ergonomics of the commnder's handle. The wave is certainly more than a novelty- its a truly innovative sollution to the requirement for fast, non spring actuated opening. However, it took much work on my part to get the commander to function properly. Also, I wonder how the knife will hold up over the years with repeated shock of waved openings. Could the ultimate commander be one with stainless steel liners and the self adjusting axis lock?
Let me qualify my above statements by saying that my knife use is purely on the utility end. I have never studied knife combatives, so my viewpoint does not reflect that type of use.

I posted the question about my STARMATE a while back. I do not think that it has been done by any one yet, at least no one has come forward. I do not feel that clip placement is a really big issue. I would like to see how it looks and works before making the mod to my knife.
Oh, yeh I love my COMMANDER also!

I just got a Commander a couple months ago and I love the wave, but don't like the upswept point, liner lock or loose pivot pin. All I want for Christmas is a Civilian with the wave
