I want a companion for my endura. I am looking for something smaller and am looking at the Caly 3 and the Sage. Both look interesting. Can anybody compare and contrast for me?

As for similarities, both knives feature full-flat ground 3" blades with a tip-up deep carry wire pocket clip. Both knives are very ergonomic with the Caly3 being a bit more slimmer in hand. Both have rock-solid lockups with virtually no blade play. Both folders comes out of the box razor sharp.

There are some differences though:

Spyderco's Sage I is a linerlock folder with CF scales and has steel-lined handles and the Sage II features titanium handles and is a framelock. The Sage has S30V for the blade steel and is manufactured in Taiwan. It also feels a bit lighter in hand, and is a flow-though design (no backspacer, just two standoffs)

The Caly3 is a lockback and features a G10 handle with steel liners (the G10 is pinned to the steel liners as well - not affixed with torx screws). The blade steel is VG-10, and it isn't a flow-though design due to the lock.

Dagon, another forum member, did a review/comparison of both knives on Youtube some time back:

I know it's not on your list...but I am eyeing the native for my next knife.

Made in USA, s30v steel, good price, smaller and lighter than an endura. Plus I like the looks of it but thats just my opinion :p

I love my Caly 3! I got the carbon fiber one with ZDP189. I like liner locks but i really liked the lines, steel, shape and ease of use of the caly 3. I thought the sage was ugly too. I got mine for a little over 100$ new.

Thanks for the input, they both seem good and I will check out the Native. Whats better, s30V or zdp 189? That ought to be a question!

I have a Caly 3 G10 and a Sage 2, and I carry them both for office EDC. They are very similar knives.

In the hand, Caly 3 feels like a smaller knife, much smaller than the specs suggest. It's thinner and and the handles are slightly shorter, but the blade length is the same. The ergonomics of the Sage 2 work better for me.

IMO, the Sage 2 is more sturdy than the Caly 3, which has some side-to-side flex in it's frame. The Sage 2 is more rigid. That said, the Caly 3 is sturdy enough for it's intended purpose.

The locks and steel are different, but both are good IMO. It's a matter of preference. The Caly 3 is definitely more expensive. On balance, I prefer the Sage 2.

I have several models of both Sages and Caly 3s. The Caly 3s have replaced everything I used to carry as EDC, even my small micarta Seb. I tote a CF/ZDP189 Caly 3 now (thanks again, Davereb).

I've taken my G10 Caly 3 on hiking/camping trips to see how it would hold up for general use. I also had an 83mm Manix and a FB with me. The Manix never came out of its case. The Caly 3 handled everything that I would use a folder for and was asking for more when the trip ended.

I really like both models and plan to continue collecting the Sage series. The CF Sage gets some weekend carry when the Caly 3 needs a day off, but the Caly 3 is still my regular carry now. It covers the warehouse at work, the yard & garden at home, and everything else that I've run into so far.
