Hello,

I really like the looks of the Spyderco Cat but Ive always been turned off by 440c. How does Spyderco's 440c compare to other steels they use. I like Spyderco's vg-10, 154cm, s30v but hate 8cr13mov.

Thanks,

Chris

I have a Spyderco Cat and EDC it quite often and I can say that the 440C's edge retention is a great deal better than 8CR13MOV or AUS-8 however it isn't quite as good as VG-10 or say 154CM but it is IMO more than serviceable.

Spyderco usually does a good heat treat, higher than average when compared to most other quality production companies, so with that said it should perform as whetrock says, a step above AUS-8/8CR and a step below 154cm/VG-10. 154cm was the upgrade to 440C as S30V is the upgrade to 154cm.

I've got a Spyderco Cat too, and it's a great little knife. It's a better slicer than many of my other smaller knives, probably more to do with its FFG blade, rather than the steel. The G10 has worn quickly, but because of the very good ergos, it's one of the most comfortable to hold among my little knives.

IMO 440c done right often gets underrated, and spyderco has always done most things right... if they picked it for a reason, I'd trust that it's the proper steel for that application. i still use 440c a lot and stand bye it for a lot of applications. just my two cents

I've always found Boker's HT on 440C excellent and I would definitelly rate it on par with VG-10 or 154 CM (IMO, of course).

Don't have the Cat, but I do own a bi-fold done by Spyderco in 440C. Overall edge retention is good so far, but I haven't used it extensively either (too short a cutting edge). You may also want to consider the superlative corrosion resistance when doing a general assessment on 440C.
