I am getting my Father in law a Superhawk for Father's Day, and probably getting my Dad a CPM D2 Para because my favorite dealer (Tom Berry AKA Catamount at www.spydercovt.com) gave me a heads up on some good deals. My Father in law just LOVES my Superhawk and has been drooling over it since I got it, and he isn't even a knife guy per se. He just uses them for work and really loves the relaxed Hawkbill's great cutting ability and characteristics, but he also loves the tremendous ergos and light weight for it's great strength. The fact I can always keep it sharp for him makes him like it all that much more (he lives a couple blocks away, so I am the family sharpener). I think he will be a happy man.
The CPM D2 Para is a knife my Dad will absolutely love. He currently carries a Civilian (he goes to bad areas sometimes and really prays it is never going to be used) and carries a standard Millie I loaned him. He really likes the weight to blade ratio on the Millie, but wishes he had the steel and FG scales of my CPM D2 Millie after I showed him the extra sharpness I can squeak out of CPM D2 compared to S30V. He is a huge fan of the cutting ability of the Millie and it's great tip, and S30V is more than serviceable so he uses that knife a lot. He does want a bit smaller blade than the Millie though to use around sheeple (though the Para is still not a sheeple freindly knife, it doesn't say pocket sword quite as much as the Millie), and the Para should fit his needs very well since the blade shape is the same as the Millie, only shorter. He never got to handle my FG Para, but when I showed him the comp lock on my Superhawk he loved it and liked the features of the Para as it is a stronger, shorter Millie. He will also get to experience the goodness of CPM D2, and I really think he will like it. If not I will have to trade him for one of my other knives, but he already has borrowed a few, and the Para is hard to not like so I have a feeling it will be his next EDC. Like my in laws, I am also the sharpener for my parents, they just live farther away than the in laws so I don't have to sharpen their knives too often, and CPM D2 and the Kreined ZDP Jess Horn I gave him don't need to hit the stones too often.
Is anyone else giving out Spydercos for Father's Day? They certainly make a good gift for a knife lover. I already know my present, which is Krein grinds on 2 of my Spydercos and a non-Spyderco (a Benchmade 760 that has the worst grind for cutting I've ever seen on a knife).
