I purchased an EXPENSIVE custom knife from fellow forumite a while ago, and he threw in a Spyderco "Standard" with an ATS-55 blade. When I purchased this, I figured it would sit on my desk with my other knives until I got bored with carrying my "expensive" knives.... but... I absolutely love this knife.... It goes with me to work at least 3 days a week.

I took a smaller pocket clip from a navigator and put it on the Standard, and polished the clip, rivets and scales, and it is really a gorgeous knife! I don't know if all of these models are the same, but I am very happy with the blade width as well, as it is wider than my other Spydies.

Point is.... Until I get My Mayo TNT... This one's my EDC for certain! and even then, it won't be far from my side. WOW, what a great little knife!

The Spyderco Standard was my first one-hand opener (1989). An excellent multi-purpose knife.

A nice package capable of a lot of duties and very beefy for its size. The Standard was cancelled for awhile and brought back briefly.

Unfortunately, if you compare it to the Benchmade Mini-AFCK (the orginal version with the round hole) I think you will find the Standard does not match up well. My guess is that the Mini-AFCK undermined any chance for the Standard to survive.

And yes, all Spyderco products are very, very well made. Best of all, their folders all feature the Spyderhole.:D

Good call.... I'll have to look a little into that BM... But I tell ya, I'm really happy with this standard! Spends a lot of time in my pocket.

Spyderco is a great company. That's why all the knives I own are Spydercos. I do like a lot of the BM designs, and will probably end up getting one. Hopefully the Spyders and Butterflies can get along together...:D

The standard was originally introduced back in the mid '80's. For years, it was our best selling model. The thunder was stolen from the Standard by the Delica when it came out. We later upgraded the Standard with a G10 handle and ATS55 blade, but the Delica FRN, Delica SS were too similar so the Standard was dropped.

I don't know that the little AFCK had much influence. The standard was a stout, tough knife and actually sold many more pieces than the mini AFCK.

That is exactly how I felt the first time that I held (and "played-with") my first Spyderco Chinook a few weeks ago! (I now have a pair of 'em.). The Chinook is 100% QUALITY, and built to last for MANY, MANY years!
