What do you think Spyderco's core competencies are? What is it they do better than other knife companies?

Two things draw me to Spyderco as a brand:

1) The company is constantly striving to grow - not in volume, but in terms of producing new knives that are better for their intended tasks than their predecessors - if any exist. Many other companies settle into a niche and never step beyond what they've become good at. I admire Sal's commitment to making constantly better knives by design, material, and process.

2) The quality in Spyderco knives is an exceptional value, at whatever price point you're buying. You always get at least your money's worth with a Spyder.

I think Brian is right. As Sal have put it, EVOLUTION. Evolution in design and materials being utilized in the production of the knives. Even the locks get redesigning. Which other knife company do u know of that regularly redesign and improve existing models. To Sal, I think he just does not want to settle what the laurel he already gotten but he wants to earn more. This is why I carefully examine all Spydie products. I am usally quiet impress.

Good comments so far. I'd add that their knives are just plain better when it comes to opening them. Sounds trivial, but the opening hole is in a league of its own.

Your use of the term "core competencies" made me feel like I was at work. It's Saturday, people!

:D I will have to say that spyderco's customer's service has alot to do with why they continue to dominate the industry. I am a little bias but then again I moved over 1200 miles away from family and friends to work for them. Alot of the reason for that is when I used to manage a fully stocked cutlery shop back home Spyderco's always made a bigger impact on the customers. And they usually stayed loyal to Spyderco. And the ones that did try other brands usually were not as impressed after they took it out and used it. Not to mention after dealing with Spyderco's competion as far as getting stuff repaired, replaced, resharpened Spyderco always went the extra mile for free or a small fee.

Best factory edges I've ever experienced--despite CS & BM claims, I've never had one of those that would shave out of the box, but every last one of my Spydies could, and did.

Eveything you guys have mentioned, and one more--sheer cutting performance. In terms of ergonomics, edge geometry, and sharpness, Spydies consistently out-cut the competition.

They do very well what knives are supposed to do--cut.

I agree with Coonskinner, on ergonomic's and edge geometry. Plus they lie flat in your pocket, which make them more comfortable to carry.

In addition to taking the past less travelled, ie: Civilian, Gunting,
Matriarch, and Ayoob. Who else has the stones to make knives like these and do it in a responsible manner.

Lastly they don't over-hype the marketing of their knives, and they always come across as a class act on the forums. Sal gives a face and a personality to associate with them, not so with most of the other mass production knife market. Unless you count Lynn Thompson who is pretty contreversial.
