Spyderco's fixed Blades for hard use

It was about a year and a half ago when they were discontinuing the Spyderco fixed blade Temperance model. Because of that I was prompted to buy a couple for the collection. But I ended up using them. Much to my pleasant surprise that is one great knife design. Even though I have heard a few people chime in on how good of hard use knives that some of the Spyderco fixed blades are it still baffles me as to why so few people like the Spyderco fixed blades.

I literally use my fixed blade Temperance models ( PE & SE) for all kinds of cutting chores. I mainly use them in the kitchen and I have another set of them that I exclusively use for hunting, fishing and other outdoor needs.

Why are so many people not talking about Spyderco's fixed blades. I think their fixed blades are just as unique as their folders and even more useful in some hard use cutting chores. I want to hear some testimonies for Spyderco fixed blades. And I don't care which model.

I like my Temperance, but I could see a bit of the tip snapping off with some of the stuff I've done camping. Other than the fine tip I really like the knife.

I really like the Street Beat, but it is more of a utility & self-defense EDC in my opinion.

The Spyderco Fixed Blade I am waiting for is the Bush-Craft they are working on. Possibly a carbon steel blade even.

I have really used the hell out of my temperance. It was my primary camp and field knife for 2 years. I have split wood with it mostly using a baton. I have used it to clean game. It holds its edge extremely well. It is not quite as easy to sharpen as 1095 it does seem to stay sharper longer.

Most all Spyderco knives do indeed have Specific Intended Purposes. With the exception of the FB Temperance and first Perrin model. That's one reason I believe that Spyderco's fixed blades have not attained the popularity that their folders have thus far.

The only desire I have at the moment for another Spyderco fixed blade would be a hunter with a Guthook. The Impala is great in that regard but it is somewhat limited in capability by it's size.

Some of the Spyderco fixed blades like the Ronin are not well understood by the mainstream knife crowd because few are familiar with the Yojimbo/Ronin concept. But the Ronin is not relegated to only SD>> it has a practical side to it as well. The LUM fixed blade has many capabilities. It's surely designed for SD but it would be a great utility blade as well. You actually have to use one of Spyderco's fixed blades to see the possibilities.

I personally think the impala is fine size wise, but I don't really feel like digging feathers and guts of folders.

The temperance just looks too much like a chefs knife to me.

Two items to consider there Sherlockbonez :) I tend to agree with you that a fixed blade would be of better use on really big game like you guys up in Canada have. I do agree that folders are a bit of a challenge to clean up after using them to field dress an animal.

Now please don't sell the FB Temperance short because this is truly a case where looks are very deceiving. The ergos and functionality of the Temperance really came as a pleasant surprise to me when I used one for the first time. However I still really would like to have a Spyderco fixed blade hunter with a guthook so that I have a valid reason to get rid of my Cold Steel "Master Hunter" Plus.

I feel like Spyderco's fixed blades are still in their infancy stage and they have a ways to go to get really established in that area. But that's the purpose of this thread so as to get some comments that might be helpful in that venture.

I only hunt turkey and waterfowl myslef, but ends up in deer and bear camps once in a while, I don't think you'll need more that 3-4 inch blade even for bigger game as long as you have a nice big bone saw to hack through the pelvis.

I have heard nothing but good things about spyderco fixed blade users. However, I haven't found one that would suit my needs better than their folders would.

For example, I been using a little mora for about 10 years, since I was a kid, until I discovered the spydie folders, and I've never went back. They serve very similar roles for me. Clearing branches/ saplings, dispatching fish and games (sometimes), make walking sticks etc. The folders does what a fixed blade would do, but in a smaller and more discreet package. This year, I made it a mission to not bring any fixed blades with me while I'm out, and see if my mini manix can suppliment my axe and saw.

Well I'm with you as far as finding "hunter folders" ideal for most field dressing jobs. I have 2 that I use: One being my Spyderco Impala with guthook and the other is an older BUCK I've had for years. So I'm kind of on the same page you're on in that regard.

One of the main purposes for this thread is to hopefully give Spyderco some input for another possible fixed blade design ( hopefully one solely geared for hunting). Now that you've mentioned it I wonder if the SPYDERSAW would be good for cutting big bones on big game? As far as a companion in the woods I can't find anything to beat a Gurkha Kukri for doing clearing work and so forth.

I also agree with you that most hunting knife chores don't require a very lengthy blade. Four inches is really about ideal. Most input for a fixed blade hunter would be welcome >>.

I have the spot as my edc and I like it a lot  my first spyderco :)
the next one I plan to buy is the Moran Featherweight.

I'm more a fixed blade guy, so I'm glad spyderco is going into fixed blades

What's this "bushcraft" spydie that I keep hearing about? Something like a sheepfoot blade and a round handle? Any links? I would buy one just to have.

The new fixed blades that came out looks decent, but after looking at the tag I decided against it since I never really found a good use for blades that size up here.

Oh c'mon...why else do you buy spydercos? :D

I use my PE temperance every day in the kitchen cutting meat and vegetables and wrappers and whatnot. I really like it. However, I am looking forward to the new H1 utility knives as a replacement so I dont need to worry about rustination or discoloring.

I like these new Hossoms, some of them are pretty big, but there are also the smaller sizes. Waiting to see when they get the 4" version released.

I would like to know what specifically the Hossum models are designed for. They are nice looking blades but I am still not convinced that the Hossums would be blades that I would use in my daily duties.

But on the other hand I may be putting my foot in my mouth because at one time I said something similar about the fixed blade Temperance model :foot: The rest is history and it is now a blade I use a lot.

I really hope we see a very expanded line up and pipeline for Spyderco's fixed blades. I would love to hear what some of you guys/gals who have gotten a Hossum and what cutting chores you've been doing with it.. Also I want to lean more about the design intent of not only the Hossum but what you all have used Spyderco fixed blade for specifically.

Temperance!

That's my fixed blade wish as of today. By the way thanks for the nice picture of the FB Temperance "jaislandboy" By my current wish is for Spyderco to make an FB Temperance with either a G-10 or Micarta handle.

Now the FRN handle is functional and I still hold the knife high on my charts but oh how much nicer it would be for it to have a more ridgid and grippy handle.

Oh nice pic of the Fallkniven too by the way
