Spyderco's in the Knife Exchange

I am somewhat new here, but I frequent the Knife Exchange forums to see what people are selling and buying. What I have noticed is that Spyderco seems to be one of the most listed companies in these forums. Why do you think that is? People bite off more than they can chew? The life of a collector, just wanting to make room for some new guys? Just curious why you guys/gals think Spyderco's are sold on here so often? Easy sellers? Maybe just some of the sprint runs are highly collectable..

I have also noted an abundance of Spydie wares on the secondary market. I'm not complaining, I just picked up a green G-10 UKPK for $50 :)
I did a forum search for "Sage 3" a while back and nearly all of the results were for sale ads in the exchange, rather than reviews and other related posts. It made me really rethink whether I wanted one.
Maybe Spydercos are like a gateway drug to customs and higher ticket production pieces.

The reasons people buy and sell knives are as varied as the people you ask. Financial hardship, the knife looking better in pictures than in the hand, blemishes, etc. I wouldn't say that one brand dominates a sales thread more than any other. Thre are all kinds of brands available, sometimes we see what is most familiar and things usually tend to move in waves frfom one manufacturer to another.

I think is has some to do with the huge variety of blades Spyderco makes. They make all kinds of different knives, with the widest assortment of steels and handle materials through their sprint runs and production lines like the Sage series.

I think its because Spyderco is so popular, and there are just so many of them in so many people's hands. Same reason you see more Toyotas than Alfa Romeos on the used car lot. They have a big chunk of the market share, so you see them where ever you look. Just my guess.

People often sell knives to buy other knives. Many of us buy more knives than we use, so some eventually get sold off either on here or to people we know.

Spyderco = Strong and consistent positive margin in secondary market.
Because Spyderco offers great value (High quality materials, f&f, Ergos at a LOW initial up front price point) People will gravitate toward buying, trying and selling them at a modest profit or at least make all if not most of their money back. You can't really say this about most of the big brands out there. Not to say other brands don't have great products. You just get into higher prices or the converse to that = too low prices and I can't make any money in the secondary market. Not to mention Spyderco's sprint strategy, which seems like a gift from the gods if you are into BST. Keeps numbers low and the market primed for high after market prices.

You guys all make valid points. Just thought it was interesting, and worth talking about. I have own 2 Spyderco's and could not be happier. But I have to realize that most of you folks came out of the womb with 2 spydies lol

It does make me feel good about my purchases though that a lot of these spyderco's get swooped up pretty fast. Deals to be had!!

I just got rid of my PPT and a few others. I loved my PPT but its a little heavier then my Para 2. I'm going to be buying nothing but Para 2's from know on

I have tried a few different knife brands and have come to like Spyderco the best for their designs, quality, ect. I personally like to exchange Spyderco's on BF to get a chance to try out a nice variety of models without having to go through retail to purchase them. The sellers I have death with have always been outstanding. I tend to buy a few to see how I like them, mostly for feel since pictures on the internet just are not the same as having the knife in hand. If I like the knife I keep it unless a financial burden comes my way (motorcycle accident 2 months ago). If it just is not my cup of tea I put it back up on the forum for someone else to have a chance to own.

It's been that way since forever. Spyderco is an extremely popular company with savvy internet users, look at the search cloud or the amount of posts on their company forum or the permanent swarm around their booth at Blade.

But, if you do a search per company for the exchange you see a slightly different picture based on threads created. Now, of course, this doesn't account for the amount of knives listed per thread but it is something to think about.

This is for the last year, any longer than that and the data is too large for the search engine to display in it's entirety.

Spyderco: 265 + 20 for Byrd
Benchmade: 357
Kershaw: 349 + 60 for the Zero Tolerance

I can go into REI or Cabelas and try out some Kershaws or Benchmades.

Nobody carries Spyderco in store, so I have to purchase them online and sell if I don't like them.

If other people have the same problem (no Spyderco in brick & mortar stores), then part of the reason is that this is the only way that we can try out different Spyderco models because we can't actually hold them in our hand in a store.

spydies are so good it became addictive...easy to impulsive buy. Before I know it, I buy too much than I should and had to let go some I like slightly less.
and sometimes I miss them so much and found it was a mistake selling them and buy them back again.....

+1 for impulsive behavior

Buy, try, sell... Buy, try, sell... And the cycle goes on.

I have no need to collect a bunch of knives. When I find that I'm not using a knife for a while and I see another one I like, I sell and then buy the new one. I don't like caging up Spydies...

Somestimes you just dont develop the feel for that knife and just send it off on its path so you can search for the one :)
