Simple question. I recently purchased a Manix 2, S110v, blurple scales. LOVE IT, by the way.

Anyway, I can't find anywhere on Spyderco's website where it says what the hrc is on this steel. So just curious, how hard is Spyderco running this stuff?

If I remember, not sure how well, I thought it was like 60-61 not sure though. I quit following it when I heard about chipping issues.

That's strange that you mention that about S110V because I've indeed had chipping problems with S30V and I avoid that steel for the most part with the exception of two models I can't get in anything else >> with those being the Dodo and Chokwe models. I've had much, much better luck overall with VG-10.

Now S90V I find to be excellent. But this is the first I've heard about S110V having issues of performance failures. Interesting for sure.

I've been carrying a S110V PM2 since January and haven't experienced any chipping other than on the tip. The chip is so small I almost didn't notice it and don't notice it when cutting or piercing anything. I only noticed it after I started playing with the bevel and reduced it to 15 degrees. I'm usually particular with this kind of stuff and would sharpen it out but since it's so small and not a big deal I'll let it go until it needs to be sharpened.

I don't particularly care for s30v either. I haven't had the issues with s35vn. I'm an Electrician so I end up cutting alot of insulation off of cable and noticed micro chipping on my s30v. So I don't own any s30v anymore. My preferred carry are my Gayle Bradley and Pm2 s35vn.

I've found spyderco's s110v less prone to chipping than s30v in my use. It usually rolls or blunts before I see any chipping. It also touches up on a steel fairly well, though that hair popping edge goes away pretty quick if you don't use an abrasive like ceramic or diamond.

I too am an electrician and find my para2 s30v chips very easily while skinning wire so I have sold off all but my digi dlc in s30v , m390 and 204p have had zero problem and my s110v will be here tomorrow so I'll carry it this week at work and let you know

Glad you guys posted about this -- have a pre order for a PM2 that I'm not sure if I want if its this much of a hassle to keep intact. Are we talking tiny chips that you cant see without a magnifying glass, or large ones that dont buff out easily?

Pics?

I haven't had any issues with S30V or S110V with Spyderco. I can only assume it has to do with the types of edges put on these knives or the type of work being done. I have had a few chips in M390 in the past with a Millie, but it was my fault.

I'm in HVAC, tons of wire stripping, and I've had no problems with both either.
