An associate of mine told me he sends his knives off to Spyderco for sharpening. Costs him $5. Looked this up for myself and seems too good to be true. has anyone done this on a regular basis?

I've never used a free sharpening service, but anyone that has, does it come back with a factory edge like on a new Golden knife?

I've never used the service, but new Golden made knives are sharpened by a robot which handles only the blades. Resharpens are not likely to be disassembled and fed into that machine.

Some time ago I had the good fortune to score a used fluted ti Military at a pawn shop. It had been heavily used but the lock up was still perfect and cosmetically it was fine. But the blade was like a butter knife and the tip was blunt. I tried like the dickens to sharpen it and did okay but nothing like a factory, NIB edge. So off to Golden it went and it came back like a friggin laser with a nice acute point, although the blade was about 1/8 inch shorter. All that for five bucks plus my original postage to Colorado. Hats off to Spyderco customer service.

I wish that I knew about this earlier. I have been trying without much luck until recently to get a Dragonfly 2 with a Superblue laminate steel for a blade. It seemed like there was a flat spot in the center of the edge that I could never see. I have made some advancement with the medium rods in my Sharpmaker and a lot of pressure. It is finally sharp. No idea what the issue was but I would have gladly sent it off to Spyderco if I knew about the sharpening service. If it gives me anymore trouble when I go to sharpen it again off to Spyderco it will go.

Most likely the bevels were uneven since they used to sharpen them by hand, unless you sharpen freehand it's almost impossible to hit the apex of the edge with a fixed angle sharpener, Just had to take off some material to make it even on both sides. It can be annoying, but you just gotta keep at it. I guarantee it's gonna be a lot easier next time you need to sharpen it.

Thank you and I hope it will be easier next time. I have always wanted to try out Super Blue steel and this small Dragonfly is my chance.

Try coloring the edge with a sharpee so you can see where your stone is making contact. It will wipe away the sharpee where the stone is doing work. You'll know if you need to hold the blade steeper or flatter. A strop will remove it when you are done or a cotton ball dipped in alcohol or acetone
