hello im wondering if spyderco uses the same size torx screws on every(or most) knife. and if so what size is it.

or can anyone suggest a torx bit set that'll be good for most knives.

thanks :)

The most popular ones are T-6 and T-9. T-6 handles all the screws except the pivot on most three-screw clip knives. T-9 handles all screws, including the pivot, on most wire clip knives and the pivots on many three-screw clip ones. There are exceptions however. The Military, for example, needs a T-15 for the pivot screw and I've run into at least a few T-8's as well.

Best inexpensive solution, at least if you're in the USA, is either the Home Depot's Husky HD-74502 T set, which includes bits for T-4 thru T-10, plus the T-15, or Lowe's similar Kobalt set (not sure of their part number). Home Depot one is generally in their "Tool Crib" area and costs around $6. From what I've read, the Lowes Kobalt set costs about the same.

If you want a top quality set, the Wiha 45598 is an excellent one and costs around $25.

Edited to add: Here's a picture of the Husky Set. The extra bits store in the handle.

I like the Husky tool the best.

I have the Husky, Kobalt, and Benchmade blue box set. I plan on getting the Kershaw tool and maybe some bits.

I just found this and it looks interesting http://www.tecratools.com/product1026.html.
Looks nice, but the bigger the handle, the easier it is to over torque small screws and strip threads or pop heads.

Isn't the Military a hex pivot screw? Or is it just mine?
Probably not just yours. Might depend on how old the knife is. Torx head screws are a relatively new thing for Spyderco and I'm not sure exactly when the Military switched to them. However, even my 2000 Spyderco Forum Military has a T-15 pivot and T-6 backspacer screws. It does differ from the new ones, in that its clip screws are phillips head instead of T-6 Torx like my new lefty one. There are also some sizes of Torx fasteners which are close enough to either a metric or SAE allen head that, as long as the fastener is not overly tight, you can turn them with that wrench, just like you can sometimes turn a phillips screw with a slot head driver, so that's another possible reason you think it's hex.

It's an orange Millie, and it's definitely hex. The hex bot fits and the Torx doesn't.

Thanks Deacon!

That's odd, since it's a recent knife.

I don't have many Militaries, and specifically don't have the orange one, but the pivots on the ones I do have, the 2000 Forum Model, S30V/CF, BG42/CF, S30V Digi Camo G-10, and LH Military all are either T-10 or T-15 Torx.

I believe my S30V, G-10, black on black Military has a hex pivot. I'll have too look when I get home.

I bought a Kershaw T-tool and it works great on both clip and pivot screws (T-6 and T-8). Also has a Phillips. Tightened my Sog Flash II with it as well.
