spyderedge or plain edge?

Being a fledgling knife collector, I decided to purchase a Delica for my one and only (for the time being) Spyderco knife. Since it will be my one and only, should I get it in plain edge or spyderedge? Normally I like plain edge, but since this is going to be my only spyderco for a while, should i get the signature spyderedge to make my spyderco as much of a spyderco knife it can be?

Oh, and is the spyderedge as good of a push cutter as the plain edge?

It all comes down to what else you carry. if it's a single knife carry, PE is more versitile. If you carry a PE on top of it, SE is a great addition. I carry miminum 1 SE on me.

SE will pushcut, if you want it even shaves(strop the edge with a shoelace and compound, and be carefull).

it all comes down to personal opinion. I had a delica for 3yrs in the 98 model(ats-55, no dent) and loved the PE.

Alright,
I was leaning towards the PE, but I thought of asking this question just in case.

BTW, I hear the Delica comes with a scary sharp factory edge, anyone want to back this up?

if its your only knife i would get PE, they come ok sharp, that said i carry a SE delica for utility along w/my emerson spec war CQC8 for other stuff, myself.

if ya want it scary sharp ya will have to get it there more than likely imho.

The SE will outcut the PE without resharpening...not paper, but rope, boxes, etc.
Might be something to consider.

If you are planning a future folder purchase with a longer blade length (3.5"-4"), you might want to get the spyderedge now and a plain edge on the longer blade. The spyderedge will give you more overall cutting surface on the smaller blade. If you get a spyderedge, I recommend the sharpmaker, which does a great job keeping the serrations sharp.

in terms of sharpness, the delica pe was one of the sharpest production knives I've handled - sharper than microtech, emerson, benchmade, crkt. but all knives dull with use, so it's up to you to maintain it and get it to a higher level of sharpness.

in terms of SE and PE, I'd say PE is more useful but SE looks cool. PE is also easier to maintain w/o a spyderco sharpmaker. The tip of the SE is sharper than the PE because of the chisel grind. Would the CE be chisel grind also - if so, then it would be sharper than PE.

if you really want easier to sharpen, sharp as heck - try the Calypso Jr PE.

PE Delica in my right pocket, SE in the left. They're inexpensive enough to do that. And they both have blue handles!

F-22,

I think you should perhaps go with a toothy edge on this kinfe, as they work really, really well. It's true that the plain edge is probably more versatile, but the serrated edge is like you say; a "signature" of the Spyderco pocketknife. When kept sharp, they are a force to be reckoned with. Make sure you also invest in a Sharpmaker to maintain it with, unless you already own one.

Best wishes, Jeff/1911.

Unless your going to be doing a lot of rope or other fibrous material cutting, It makes alot more sense to get the PE, IMHO. It's good at so many things, and can even perform great at rope cutting if you make the edge toothier with some coarser stones.

I had a PE Delica and it was my EDC. Excellent knife, and I can't wait to get one again!

BTW, mine came EXTREMELY sharp from the factory. It popped hairs off with almost no pressure.

Tough decision :(

I still think I am going to get the PE, as mentioned above, I will just use a coarser grit to make microserrations, like on my 806D2.

The SE looks so cool; I almost want to get one just for the coolness factor, but then again, I cant afford a sharpmaker right now.

Spyderco knives come scary sharp and then some. If you're doing heavy duty work cutting a lot I'd suggest the more efficient, edge retaining spyderedge. If not, I suggest the plain-edge, which is easier to cut accurately with.

is that knife (for your one and only) the Delica OD blackblade? It is neat lookin, and VG-10 too! Does anyone know what they coated the blade with?

In my signature? That is a Benchmade 806D2. The blade coating is BT2, a teflon type coating.

I don't like serrated edges. I have a spyderedge Police and though I am able to sharpen it, it is much more difficult to do so than with a plain edge. I won't get any more knives with serrated blades.

Hi F-22,

happy new year. Get a PE! I guess it is most usefull, more than spydderedge. Think about push cuts like whittling.

I was gonna recommend a spyderedge, but don't listen to me. I'm coming from the perspective of a guy who carries at least 2 plain edged folders on him at all times. I just ordered an Endura with SE just so I'd have a good serrated edge for EDC. :)

Hello Blop, i havent seen you in a while! How are things going in Deutschland?
