So ever since I gave a friend my spyderEdge D4 in vg-10 i have wanted to replace it . I love the fully SE blade as it seems to never get dull and last night I finally ordered a replacement in zdp-189 !!! Does anyone out there have experience with a zdp spyderEdge ? I'm expecting it to hold an edge even longer than the one in vg-10 which I never had to sharpen in a year of using it , and would like to hear some others experience with this edge/blade steel combo , as it will ease the waiting game lol!!!

I think I once recall Sal saying h1 fully serrated will out preform any other steel this way. I could be wrong though and god knows i love me some zdp.Go for a salt one spyderedged.

Somthing in H-1 and spyderEdge is def on my list of must haves !!!! Especially since they now have an adjustable pivot!! I have a ladybug salt in plain edge and it's ok but like you said it's susposed to be a beast with a serrated edge !

Seems like the zdp serrated models aren't very talked about i found very little info searching the forums . Any users out there ?

Serrated edge knives are not very well liked in general I find. I own one and it cuts really well.

Yeah... I don't get it?? Every SE spydie I have had is a cutting machine !!!! They slice paper and pop hairs , not to mention staying sharp way longer !!!

I love mine - the first Spyderco I owned was a fully serrated Endura in VG-10 steel.

I've owned no less that a dozen Enduras since, including the ZDP-189 model (whose scales now reside on my serrated VG-10 model) and after all the selling & trading, I've still kept that first one in serrated VG-10. I haven't had a chance to try ZDP-189 in serrated form yet, but if it performs in any way like the VG-10 Serrated Endura, it'll serve you well, and will stay sharp enough to cut easily for a longer time between sharpenings.

After a week of daily carry on the job and at home this knife hasnt failed to impress me !!! Iv cut Manila rope , cardboard , thick ass zip ties , carflex (flexible electrical conduit) , branches ,stripped wire etc.... And the zdp spyderEdge still easily push cuts paper !!!! I'm blown away quite frankly and I will keep pushing this knife until it's too dull to work with .... I really want to see how far it will go without needing any maintaince . So far I have high hopes for the almighty spyderEdge in zdp-189 !!! Will update again next Friday !!!

I'm curious to hear what you think of the ZDP Spyderedge after 4 years of use, if you still have it. I just picked up a LNIB Delica ZDP SE from 2008 last night and plan on putting it through the paces. ZDP seems like a great SE steel from what I've read and my little experience with it in one of my Manbugs (and I use that little blade more than any I own).

ZDP-189 is great steel but you really dont need it serrated, the plain edge cuts like a laser! I would advise against cutting until its dull though as it will be much harder to get it back to full sharpness. Best to touch it up as you go along.

I had the combo edge zdp delica. I used it a lot at work and I must have sharpened the plain edge portion a dozen times, but never needed to even touch up the serrations, and I used them a lot too. I ended up selling it, but I would buy another full spyder edge knife in zdp. Wish they made the dragonfly and the Caly 3.5 like that.

In 2013 on another forum, Mr. Sal commented on why production ended on the Delica 4 SE ZDP-189: "We had more tooth breakage than we like. I guess some of our customers were using them harder. Maybe twisting them? If a customer wants a serrated edge and wants exceptional edge retention, we usually steer them to H1."

The prolific and infamous Cliff Stamp later responded to a poster who surmised that the ZDP hardness was at issue in tooth breakage: "It isn't the hardness but the carbide density. If you want some materials data you can search for effects for example to replace the normal steels used in sheep shearing combs with HSS. The wear resistance is great but the tips often snap off. Materials inspections has shown that the small cross section can not handle the high carbide load. The carbide volume in ZDP-189 is even higher and carbides both crack themselves and they shorten the distance a crack has to propogate to produce a large scale fault."

My conclusion is that SE ZDP-189 can have excellent edge retention, but may be subject to breakage due to lateral forces (prying) applied to the thin cross-sections of the SE teeth.

I happen to love SE edges, but as a light user am not concerned about steels and edge retention. My SE Spydie edges seem to last forever.

Just FWIW.

And, thanks for this post. ^
I guess I'll use my Pacific Salt as my SE Endura but boy do I like TD.

And I bet you^ wanna sell it?
Congratz!

Actually no, it was a gift from my uncle recently. He has quite a few older spydies he bought years ago and has been taking my unwanted Benchmades in trade lol
