Spyderedged Blades: Different Blade Steels, Different Results

There has been some talk on 3 of these great forums about the subject of serrated knives and how different many of them are with different blade steels. One thing that stands out to me is that many of you guys have told me what your favorite blade steels are for Spyderedges and I've been stunned to learn that many of them are rated high for serrated edges with blade steels that are not known to be so hot with plain edges .

One prime example are the serrated/Spyderedged blades in the H-1 Salt Series>> Spyderco themselves have said in the past that H-1 Spyderedges are among their very best. Whereas H-1 blade steel for plain edges isn't all that hot>> it's about average or slightly above at best. But I can tell you first hand with the hard use I've put my H-1 Spyderhawk through it holds up extremely well and doesn't need sharpening very often but rather just touched up occasionally.

Another example is one of my older Spyders which is an AUS-8 Catcherman model I have which is fully serrated and it's been one of my very best Spyderedged work blades I've ever owned and I won't get rid of it for nothing. But again AUS-8 isn't really know for super good plain edges but rather just average or slightly above at best.

Tell us which Spyderedged models you like the best and which blade steel in Spyderedge you've had the best luck with?

I think H-1 has the best reputation for Sypderedge but I have a Delica in full serrated VG-10 and it works very well.

I've heard some of the guys over at Spyderco.com complain about VG-10 and ZDP-189 both having chipping problems with Spyderedged blades but I've personally used VG-10 serrated Spyders for some extremely demanding jobs and I've never had anything happen except the edges needed to be sharpened again. Which I do all the time anyway.

One of the older blade steels that I like in Spyderedge and plain edge both was the older CPM 440V ( S60V). That blade steel is ferocious in Spyderedge.
