Spyderfly Clone

I was shocked to see what might have been a byrd knockoff at a recent show. It was hard to tell for sure because theyre are so many Spyderco approximations already out there and I have not seen too many byrds, but the handle slots and general design looked familiar. I almost bought it to take home and compare to byrd pictures (that would be a speedy knockoff), but they wanted $5 and it was about the quality you get from Smoky Mountain for $1.50. I wasn't THAT curious.

If someone sells a look-a-like it is hard to stop them as long as they don't violate any patents or copyrights. If someone takes a look-a-like and says it is the real thing that is something that eBay will crack down on. Some of the manufacturers, (ie. Leatherman), actually go through all of the auctions to make sure that if the title says Leatherman, it really is. They will have eBay remove any auction where Leatherman is even mentioned in the title if the item is not a Leatherman. People will often put "clone", "copy" or "like a Leatherman". Some companies are not as assertive, or have the manpower to pursue these sellers. I notice that two auctions are noted in this post with very different titles. One is sad, the other outright deception. Sal once told me that as soon as the copies hit the market the sales of the original will drop. So as collectors and enthusiasts we do have something to lose if these individuals and companies cause Spyderco to lose business thus effecting their ability to design new products for us. Feel free to contact the seller or eBay when you see this. They do take action.

I just reported it to ebay,it should be removed soon.

It is misuse of a brand name.

Its funny cus this A**hole redid his description. The other day I seen the ad and it said (LIKE) the spyderfly. :grumpy: What happens when someone that doesnt know knives buys one of these pieces of junk, and gets it home and finds out how cheap it is, and because he thinks that it is truly a spyderco, he will think that all spydercos are crap. :(

I sent a measage and told him it was not a Spyderco. Here is his reply.
thank you for making me aware of this as i am not a knife expert. this knife was sold to be as a spyderco spyderfly and that is why I am selling it with the same description. However, i will add a disclaimer as soon as possible.

Isn't it funny how if a legitimate company makes a good product and someone completely abuses or missuses it until it fails and somebody gets hurt, the company gets sued to kingdom come, but if a sleezeball makes a cheap knock off of a good product of such poor quality that to rely on it would be suicide, oh well, your tough luck mister consumer. Sometimes it is too bad that the days of .44 caliber justice are past.

In all honesty,
I might buy one of these and make it into a trainer. A heck of a lot better then taking apart a perfectly good spyderfly.
