been seeing a few of these on that 'major online auction site' they also appear to not be pre-orders either...

anyone got one in hand, and can give us some insight?

I bought one at the local sports discount warehouse for $69 which I thought was a real good price. Taking it home I compared it to my Ti Benchmade. I thought that it was going to be a lot longer, but it is just a little longer in the handle and blade. The shape of the handle end makes it look larger.
When the knife is closed, you just squeeze on the handles and the latch pops open. It does not lock in the open position although the blade is very secure when opened. The handles appear to be steel and are very substantial. I think the broad end would make an excellent impact tool. The opening and "swing" of the blade and handles when manipulating the knife feels far better than my Benchmade. It also feels like an heavier knife. I think that this would be an easier knife to learn on than the Benchmade. The handle design is different and I assume that there are different moves that can be accomplished utilizing the finger "holes". I know that Eric Glesser has gotten quite good with this version of the balisong and I would like to see him in action. I would be curious to see how an expert balisong artist reacts to the different design of the handles. I am also curious as to where it is made since I did not notice a place of origin. The quality is excellent as usual and the blade is scary sharp. I wouldn't mind having a Spyderfly trainer to practice with. Hope this helps.

I just got mine, and it is pretty cool. I too, thought it was going to be larger than in turned-out to be. It is a nice, robust butterfly knife with that characteristic Spyderco quality!

I don't know anything about balisongs, but you guys are really making me want to get one...

Check the Balisong/Butterfly forum for lengthy information, pictures, and opinions.

There's a huge demand for them right now. Finding an online vendor will be difficult if not impossible. Even if you can get on a pre-order list, you'll be pretty far down the line.

I posted these pics in the Butterfly forum a couple days ago, guess I could have posted them here also, enjoy:

Shot a bunch of pictures today of the Spyderfly, was trying to get some from about every angle and every aspect of the knife. Some of them came out nice, there is one with a nice close up of the handle texture (which I am impressed with). You will notice that one the pics shows up as a blue tint to the handle, that what you get shooting indoors compared to outdoors lol.

I put the pics up on the webspace my ISP provides me, so this is not store related I just wanted to share pics with some who may not have seen the thing up close and personnel yet. Hopefully Comcast can handle a few extra hits :)

Beware though some of these are large pics so made load slow depending on your connection:

So are you guys saying the handles don't "lock" even with the latch?
I can't "lock" the handles open at all?

Yeah that is right. It just locks closed. Something to do with legality in some state or another.

Extraordinary photographs at NGK's links.
Remarkable, in fact.

I thought I could live without a Spyderfly; but no longer.

By the way, these photos reveal the absolute genius of Spyderco design, not only from the functional and ergonomic point of view, but in consideration of aesthetics, marketing and manufacturing as well.
We actually live at the same time as Sal Glesser and we correspond with him on this forum.
Profound.
We live in the best of all possible worlds.

Through some odd slippage in the normal distribution of "day late and dollar short," I found a local dealer with 4 in stock. Now, she has two in stock.

One will stay pristine, the other will see some use.

I like this, bali, but it is certainly different from my others. Looking at the latch, I can't help but think this is crying out for some after-market version that locks it open, as well. If I can find some appropriate stock, I'll try my hand.

You have to keep your eyes open. I got lucky and happened to log onto the "For Sale by Dealers" forum when 1SKS announced that they had 10 in stock. I ordered two from them, they arrived today.

I've posted my initial review here. Chuck Gollnick did an excellent write-up on his site; there is also some discussion on the balisong forum.

I'm very interested in the 3" version as well; I'd LOVE to see a 3" wharncliffe with a full Spyderedge.
