Hey guys,

Today I got my PE Spyderhawk H1 today and it's an incredible knife, but I am weary of the edge.

It seems dull which is very unlike Spyderco, but then again it could be the blade shape. It cannot push cut paper (of any type) but it shaves okay.

My question to you is if you have gotten your Spyderhawk are you experiencing this as well?

Thanks.

I've heard that edge-hardness on H1 improves as you sharpen. The alloy work-hardens.

Perhaps just sharpen it, and with time the edge retention will improve.

Directly from Spyderco´s home page: "Nothing is more appropriately engineered for downward, pulling cuts than a Hawkbill blade. The tip’s curve holds what you’re cutting against the sharp edge for failsafe, downward-motion cutting, done at arms length."

Thanks, but these are not the kind of answers I was looking for. I wasn't looking for sharpening or steel advice, I wanted owners of the Spyderhawk and their input. Still wondering.

Some of my Spyderco knives have come insanely sharp, and some I've needed to touch up. My Tasman Salt was one of the former, and I could push cut paper no problem (and, unfortunately, skin :p ). I also have a Spyderhawk in the mail, so if it comes before you get a straight answer, I'll post about it.

Well, something is definitely wrong with this knife. It came dull and will not get sharp. Perhaps the heat treatment was botched? I'm not sure but I will definitely send it in to Spyderco and have it sharpened and buffed or perhaps replaced if something is truly wrong with it.

I was playing with an unused Tasman Salt at the local knife store a couple weeks ago and I was surprised by how dull the factory edge was. It would barely shave. It kind of turned me off to buying it, because I know how much of a pain it would be to sharpen such a curved blade.

Most of the Spydies I have purchased(a lot) have all come with hairpopping edges from the factory. This one was an exception.
