Hey, I had posted this in the General section earlier, but didn't get any good answers so I figured I'd post it here. I would love to get an answer from Sal or Kristi.

Hey guys,

Today I got my PE Spyderhawk H1 today and it's an incredible knife, but I am weary of the edge.

It seems dull which is very unlike Spyderco, but then again it could be the blade shape. It cannot push cut paper (of any type) and can barely shave.

My question to you is if you have gotten your Spyderhawk are you experiencing this as well?

*And then I posted* Well, something is definitely wrong with this knife. It came dull and will not get sharp. Perhaps the heat treatment was botched? I'm not sure but I will definitely send it in to Spyderco and have it sharpened and buffed or perhaps replaced if something is truly wrong with it.

I sorta doubt the heat-treatment was botched since H-1 is not conventionally heat treated, but if you are not happy with it, by all means send it to Spyderco with a detailed description of the problem. If there really is something wrong with the knife, Sal is going to want to know.

If you aren't proficient with sharpening a very curved hawkbill like the Spyderhawk you can send it in and I'm sure Spyderco will get it popping hairs. They are consistently the sharpest OOTB knives out there, but sometimes you are going to get a less than extremely sharp as they are hand sharpened on an assembly line. If they can't get it sharp at the factory I guarantee they will replace it, but I doubt it has any problems. In about a week I should be getting my SE Spyderhawk that I have been pre-ordered on since they were announced.

Got mine the day the SFO had em. It's basically perfect. Super sharp out of the box, after a bit of time on the whites, it's even better ;)

As Mike said, just send it back, there is a reason people say Spyderco has the #1 customer service.

How are you sharpening it? Spyderco has consistently had the sharpest out of the box knives for me, but every once in a while you get one that isn't quite so sharp.

Here are some bad pics.

As far as sharpening serrated hawkbills they really aren't to much different to sharpen as a standard blade serrated edge. Now plain edged Hawkbills are kind of tricky. They truly do need to do a video on sharpening Hawkbills because there are some tricks to sharpening them. The Dodo model is the trickiest Spyderco Hawkbill to sharpen. It took me quite a while to find a surefire method for sharpening that one.

But sharpening Hawkbills is not rocket science either. A lot of it boils down to just using plain old common sense. There is a small section on the booklet that comes with the 204 Sharpmaker and there is a small section on the DVD that comes with the 204 sharpmaker. Personally I like using the 701 Profile set that Spyderco sells for sharpening most Hawkbills.

Ive been thinking about getting one of these. Anyone have a picture of them closed?
Is it going to take up my entire pocket?

My Pro Files are in the mail to me as we speak. I've been wanting to get them for a long time and the Spyderhawk SE finally gave me a good enough excuse in my mind to place the order. That said the Sharpmaker is working decent enough for me with the Spyderhawk, but I like the tree topping and better sharpness I have been able to get on "standard" blade shaped SE knives on the 204.

Mike you will love the Profiles when you get them. They are an extremely versatile sharpening tool and highly prefer them over any sharpening method I'm currently aware of ( particularly for Hawkbills PE & SE). Now the 204 Sharpmaker does a decent job on Spyderedges but I feel the 701 Profiles simply do a much more precision job on them. I sure wish they would make a diamond 701 Profile because I would sure use it a lot.

Also you just can't hardly beat the 701 Profiles to sharpen plain edged Hawkbills in the field. Learning to sharpen the tips is a bit tricky but can be done with some serious practice. I've been carrying 2 EDC Spyders daily for quite some time now ( Hawkbill and a conventional blade). And I find uses for both of them almost on a daily basis.

This H-1 Spyderhawk is really going to make a lot of new Hawkbill fans ;)

JD, what tips do you have for sharpening SE knives (particularly Hawkbills) with the Pro Files? Do you go 1 scallop at a time, and do you use the corner or curve? The Spyderhawk SE has super pointy serrations unlike the "smoother" serrations on my Endura Wave SE, so the sharpmaker doesn't get the extremely sharp edges I'm used to getting on my Spyderhawk like I get on my E4W. Hopefully using the right technique on the Pro Files will get me the tree topping edge I'm used to getting on SE knives, though I must say even at mediocre sharpness the Spyderhawk still cuts like a demon.

Each one of your Profile stones have 2 different degree radii. One will usually fit the scallop or come very close. I push the radius toward the edge and not away from it. It makes a profound difference when you do it that way. And yes I personally do one scallop at a time. And it doesn't take as long as you might think either. The spikes I do with the corners. Now Spyderco's kitchen cutlery and their older serrated Catcherman model fillet knife have a different and more wavy serration pattern and I have a different method for those.

We truly need to make a video/DVD on how to use the 701 Profiles and also how to properly sharpen Hawkbill blades SE & PE.

Also the Profiles are so versatile that you can sharpen many tools with them. Again I truly wish that they would come out with a diamond 701 Profile. That would be awesome.

I received my shipment of H-1 Spyderhawks this morning. The PE that I checked was much as you describe - it would shave arm hair with effort, would not push-cut paper, and just did not "feel" sharp. Checking mine showed the edge is rather thick at 0.034" at the top of the bevel on the average and the edge angle matched the 40 degree setting on my SharpMaker. However, a few minutes on the SM was all it took to get it push-cutting with ease and shaving cleanly. The serrated version did not require even this little bit of routine maintenance.
