spyderhole zip tie usage

I originally bought an endura to use it with the zip tie in the spyderhole opening method but found that it didn't open consistently. Also if i placed it in my back pocket the zip tie would press against my wallet leaving marks. I was wondering how many of you with spyderco tip ups actually carry your knife with the zip tie method.

I tried my delica with a zip tie for a day, I didn't like the way it looked at all.

There is going to be a waved Endura coming out soon though, Sal and Emerson worked something out about allowing Sal to use the Wave design.

What size zip tie are you using? Is it on tight?

I have one on my AFCK and it works very well. For me, the trick was to find one with a large enough "locking box" and get it as tight as possible.

Really looking forward to that waved endura. The ones where people grind out a part of the opening hole of a standard endura just look wrong to me, so let's hope the official version will have a hole AND a wave.

The initial waved Endura run is small, and I'd gather is going to be substantially bought up by SDF members ... we don't know how many extras will be floating around, nor if Sal's deal with Ernie will allow him to do another run.

If you can't get an official waved endura, the options are to use a zip tie, or take a dremel to it. I find that using the very biggest zip tie I could find, and tightening down very hard, it would wave open fairly reliably. A lot of people have dremeled away the front part of the hole, and claimed to have gotten good reliability on the resulting homegrown "wave".

I have two older Enduras, black FRN with broken-off integral FRN clips. I have a black medium size zip tie on each, pulled TIGHT, with thin black nylon shoelace behind the tie. The shoelace is wrapped around the arch of the thumbhole using the "cord wrap" method so that there are no knots or loose ends. The wrap pushes the zip tie towards the tip of the blade and helps keep it from sliding back. It still looks "pimped," but (I think) it gives it a more finished look. The zip tie works pretty well when you pull the knife from the pocket, but it seems to work best when you pull the knife out in a reverse grip.

Anybody have a picture of this zip tie thing? I have no idea what you guys are talking about.

Regarding the numbers of waved Enduras, here's part of a post by Sal which gives the details.

"500 is the planned run. If the run is successful and James in interested in moving forward, Ernest is willing as is Spyderco."

If the first 200 go to the Spyderco Collectors Club and SDF members have their chance at the next 300, that isn't going to leave a lot floating around.

I do.

Sometimes you have to have the knife a bit further away from the end of your pocket. And sometimes, you have to draw it away from your body. Also , remember that the blade is still moving, after it leaves the pocket, so a little flicking action to get it to lock doesn't hurt. ;)

I zip-waved my Civilian a few months ago. Too wicked! It was fun for a few weeks, then the joy died down. The little nub was pecking at my jeans when I try it out and I removed it. One thing though, it really works. No dremelling like what SDF advocates.

the package on the zip tie says 8inch zip ties that can support 75lbs. i think they were the second biggest i found in the hardware store with the biggest being rediculously huge. Yeah pushing the blade out and against the outer layer of my pocket helps but it doesnt work all the time. I'll probably end up carrying my m16 more often.. the flipper is just that much more reliable for quick use. As for the waved endura.. oooo.. quite tempting but depends on the price range.. also seing how as i already have a endura i'd rather wait and see if there is a waved delica instead. but who knows.. perhaps i'll fall in love with the waved endura at first sight.
