So im going through some of my late uncle's stuff and came across a box of knives... and well i saw a spyderhole in the box and pulled out what i believe to be a partially serrated spyderkey/hummingbird. Can anyone confirm or ID this little guy and pass along some info?

We made about 15 or so variations. Made by Nakamura in Seki. Quite rare.

This find truly means the world to me. I have been collecting knives less than a year, with my main collection being stainless steel Spydies. I was going through my late uncles stuff today, and found his knife collection with the Spyderkey inside. It's funny to me that i would be collecting stainless spydies, and randomly come across this in a box of semi collectible novelty knives several years after his passing.

I cleaned up the emblem a bit so the brass shows through too! Its in pretty nice condition, very lucky to have found it!

I do have a quick question about this spyderkey specifically, is this the tie clip version of the spyderkey? It doesnt look damaged or like it was seperated from a clip on the back, but the info i dug up indicates this isnt a regular variation of the stainless steel spyderkey.

I think I'd have to see the knife to know for sure. The clip was welded to the scale. Are there marks on the backside scale?

The backside looks finished with little scuffing. When i return to CO i can take pictures (its in the mail now) of the back as well.

What a cool find!!! The fact it was your uncle's makes it even more special.

Hi Maugust,

I have a few in my office. I'll check to see if we made both. There isn't too much info on them. We were very small company when we made them and I'm probably one of the few with memory of them.

We had a collector in France that had them all save one. I happened to have the one he was missing. $100 to Children's hospital and he's happy.

Thanx for the offer. I'll be travelling quite a bit this fall / wiinter so if you want to come out to the shop, you'll need to make sure I'm in.

How I wish I lived near spyderco . I'd make it a monthly trip :) and try to sneak out with sprints before they hit the market.

Im curious if you have a picture of the tie clip spyderkey? I suspect this may have been the tie clip and them the handle was refinished somehow because the scales are not equal on both sides, the back scale is thinner and flat with no rounding like the show scale.

I have found limited pictures of full spyderkey sets (i believe the pictures were from the collector in france you mentioned), and my version does not match any in the pictures

Sounds like it might have been the tie clip version with the clip removed. the non tie clip versions were finished the same on both side.

Yes I agree with you, I have found a few pictures indicating it was the tie clip version. Did a good job cleaning up the back, i didn't even realize at first! Almost wish it was still complete with the neck tie, but I'm still happy to have this piece! Thank you for taking the time to help me identify this, it means a lot to me!
