I am conteplating getting some Spyderco Ceramic Benchstones. Is the medium to fine to ultrafine a logical progression, or is the fine stone an unnecessary step?

Thanks.

I would say it depends on the edge you want. In my opinion you can get a scary sharp edge with just one of the white stones. So you do not have to buy both the Fine and the Ultra Fine. Chosing one is ok. The edge you get will be shaving sharp.
But if you want a mirror polish it is better to have both the Fine and the Ultra Fine. Is this necessary? I don't think so. Especially when it comes about kitchen or utility knives. Bercause that shiny polish is gone as soon as you use the knife.

Conclusion: Medium + Fine or Ultra Fine will give you super sharp edges.

the medium is one of my faves. i try to use the ultra fine for honing razors but it really isnt that useful for edc blades unless all you do is slice paper etc. razors i shave with these days dont usually go further than a 500 grit shapton glass stone. if you know what your doing a 500 grit to a series of strops is enough to have a good shave. i have felt the fine ceramics made by idahone and i believe the finish is close to that of the spyderco fine. id say if you have an itch to try them go with fine and medium and drop the uf. the other two will produce arm shaving without question

I have all 3 stones, but rarely use the ultra fine. It seems comparable to the use of a strop with fine compound. The fine will produce a really nice edge and is a finishing stone.
