Spydero Lionspy - thoughts and sharpening

Hey all,

I just received my Spyderco Lionspy. I am extremely satisfied with the knife. It shipped from Amazon brand new and has none of the fit and finish issues (irregular jimping, uneven G10/ti, sticky lock) that I have read or heard about.

The knife really does have a beast of a blade. I have loosened up the pivot screw a tiny bit and it now opens and closes smoothly with 0 blade play.

The one question I do have though, is how to sharpen the factory convex edge...

Do I touch it up with the white rods at 40 degrees on the Sharpmaker? I have the Sharpmaker with the standard and diamond rods and I would love your advice on how to sharpen the Lionspy ...

best bet is to use the edge till it needs to be sharpened and then if you still are in love with the convex edge then try freehanding it.

Has anyone had success sharpening or reprofiling the edge with the Sharpmaker? Would it take long with the diamond stones? Would a blade of this thickness cut well with a 40 degree edge?

I have also read that stropping works well with the convex edge.. Is this sufficient to get a very sharp knife or is freehand sharpening necessary?

You can sharpen on sharpmaker. use the sharpie trick to make sure you're hitting the edge. over time this will remove the slight convexing on the edge. I've had my lionspy since april and love it. I have been freehand sharpening with sandpaper and mousepad. This will maintain the slight convex edge. Stropping will keep it sharp if you don't let it get dull.

Best way to sharpen a convex edge for minimal expense, is with sandpaper on a semi-soft surface, such as cardboard, leather on wood, etc. If you truly want convex, you cann't really do it with hard flat stones.

If you have something like an edgepro, you could convex on that with a slight mod on how stone is held.
