I just checked one out at the Paragon (NYC). I was a little dissapointed. My primary concern with the design was that the tool did not stay closed on its own - it was loose and wobbly. The salesperson told me that the display model was in no way faulty and it was exactly what you would get if you were to buy one. He wasn't too pleased with it either. Someone (Sal?) please correct me if I am wrong.

The concept is sound, and it looks great in the photos. But unfortunately, I feel that it does not stand up to Leatherman tools.

PLease keep in mind this was just a cursory glance at the tool and in no way did I spend a great deal of time familiarizing myself with it. However, these days, with most Spyderco products, I am immediately taken by the functionality and design of the product. This was not my reaction to the SpyderRench.

Simplicity not complexity.

I just bought one last night and one thing i have found is that depending on how you put the file in will change weather it stays closed properly i dont know if it is just me or if it is like this with all of them though

Yes, you do need to put the file in properly.

The flat side of the file should face toward the driver bits. The flat screwdriver head on the file should be inserted into the spring. That way, the phillips head protrudes through and acts as a spring loaded detent. One of the cooler pieces of engineering, IMHO.

Ditto on the file placement. I discovered that after an evening of manipulation. As far as comparing it to a Leatherman I don't think that there is a difference in quality or durability. The Spyderwrench is so completely unique in design that it becomes an apples vs. oranges discussion. The one thing the Spyderco has that does not compare is the full sized blade. Also you can split it into two separate tools to tighten screws held by nuts at the same time. Enjoy.

Ronald - Some of the early pieces were too loose. They shouldn't have gone out. current production is getting better all of the time.
