Here's a little doodle I just did, wouldn't it be great to have something like this, the only thing I missed on my late SAK was the ability to open it one handed, and a pocket clip. Marry the two and get the best of both worlds :

what do you think?

Ps all I want for this magnificent drawing is one of these babies when you make them....he he.

Hi DM. Interesting notion. Please consider this. If Spyderco were to make a knife such as you sketched, (Which we are not), with our quality insted of SAKs, it would have to cost 3 times as much. I don't think the market would pay 3 times as much for the piece.

SAKs are a "price point" knife. With reliable performance as our driver, Spyderco is at the other end of the spectrum.

Hi, thanks for replying. I do have a couple of points to make tough.

1. I readily admit this was not my original idea. I read several posts that were clamoring for the marriage of a spydie and a sak. And suddenly found myself scetching what it could look like. I do not think people would think of it as a sak with a spyderco blade, rather as a spyderco knife with added functionality. This way people who want to carry light , do not have to carry both a locking folder and a sak.

2 . About the price, a normal sak is say 15-20 $ this x 3= 45-60 $ i think a lot of people at least here would pay that for the convenience of a one handed , locking blade, pocket clip folder with added functionality. Of course if the normal man on the street is willing to that's another matter entirely.

Just a couple of points I wanted to mention maybe someone else has something else to add.

PS you dont think sak's are reliable ??

Sal, I agree with DM, and I think it would be a winner. But I'm not in the business.

I would still encourage you to get someone working on this idea. Toss it around and do some preliminary studies. Put a drawing up in your outlet perhaps, and wait for comments?

I've paid over fifty dollars for a Delica and almost twenty dollars for a little itsy bitsy LadyBug! The idea of paying sixty dollars for a "sheeple-friendly" multipurpose "Spydersak" with a sub-three inch blade is not against my religion! Remember, this is a knife which could often (if not mostly) replace TWO knives, and be more "politically correct" while still providing a "tactical edge" superior to any SAK or sliplock.

No, I'm no marketing genius, but I know what I like! I bet lots of other knifeknuts would like it too, in addition to the "WOW!" factor I think it would provide to "average" buyers.

I'm just commenting because DM brought it back up!

Ive worked at a knife retailer for a while now. WHat ive noticed, is that if you show a person a quality piece and explain to them "this one is 80 bucks because of features XYZ that make it better" they often will pop for the better one and be happy about it. I think what someone might find is that by spending a little more, they will get something that works a lot better. i look at a delica vs the 20 wal mart equivalent buck model. similar designs, worlds of difference in quality. Same could be said in the SAK world. I say go for it... if nothing else, i can guarantee one sale

I want one, but only if you've got:
a) the scary sharp flat ground blade (ideally looking more like a Vic SAK (NOT Wenger!)--they look more "sheeple friendly" than the typical Spydie offering, & I carry a Delica & a Rookie everywhere;
b) tweezers;
c) toothpick.

Yes, I'm serious.

I'm thinking this would be a smaller alternative for people who only want a good blade with a couple of srewdrivers, bottle/can opener , cork screw and what do you call the pointy thingy with the hole in ?w/easy access to them. (and if you insist tweesers and toothpick.....)
all in a solid package with a pocket clip.
But as you can see from above Sal has already said he wont make it so I guess its a moot point anyhow.

DM,

I think it's called the "big fold-out needle-like thingy."

And don't despair, I'm sure Sal has several prototypes under construction...after all, he has to beat Eagle knives to market, right? Have to keep the "Spydersak" a secret for awhile longer...

(Hey Sal, I'm ready to receive the first prototype for bagel table testing at my health club.)

Everyone else, email me for more conspiracy theories. I'm full of them!

And full of THAT, too...

Aha I see now. Deep down in the secret underground labs of spyderco, “Officially disavowed “ they are feverishly working on different prototypes all realizing that this will become the ultimate sak and that it will swoop the market, people will stand in line outside knife shops just to get a glimpse of the new miracle. There will be VIP’s fighting to be the first ones to own one and all ready to endorse it for free if only they can get their hands on a copy.
Yes makes perfect sense to me now.

Well, I won't say never. "Never say never". I will say that it is not a priority at this time.

My design load right now is pretty large. We have some models that need upgrading in design. With 11 new models scheduled for next year (2002), it might be a while.

I popped in because of a thread over on practical tactical. I wanted to say I like the idea also. I would like one for $70 or less. A colored handle would also be cool.

Right now there is a Mini Dyad clipped to my right front pocket. Resting down in the bottom of that pocket is a Victorinox Classic. In matching black of course. I have been carrying both for several weeks now. Neither will do the others job. Would I buy a Spysak? I don't know. I'd sure give it a lot of thought. Especially if it did not have a corkscrew or other fluff and did have a Spyderco main blade, turnscrews and tweezers and a small precision blade.

11 new models? Whoah!!
eek.gif
That's BIG load alright!! The SpyderSAK is indeed a noble idea. But if you put it down to the economics of scale, the cost of producing one and selling it would be prohibitive...

It's very nice, but there just won't be time since the Spyderbali probably has top priority. I think that's what most the guys on the balisong forum heard also.
