Hey everyone, just got my new chaparral in the mail yesterday. LOVE it. Its so slim and enjoyable to carry, and I like how the blade is so thin. It makes the thing slice like nothing else I own. As far as this knife is concerned, arm hair no longer exists

I have a question about the XHP though. Ive never used a knife with it before, so what kind of edge retention, corrosion resistance, toughness (not really a big deal in a folder like this), etc can I expect from this steel? I just touched it up (unnecessary, but whatever) and noticed that it can get SUPER sharp. Like sharper than most other steels Ive used. In fact, this is now probably my sharpest knife, surpassing the VG-1 on my Master Hunter. I think its also the geometry of the chaparral's blade thats adding to the shaving ability, but still, this sucker is SHARP:thumbup:

I just gave it a few passes on the ceramic rods, followed by a couple stages of stropping, and I got this disgustingly sharp edge.......yes disgusting......:D

The combination of thinness and sharpness make it feel like Im carrying a lightsaber:thumbup:

Anybody else with chaparrals out there? Feel free to post pics if you like!

CTS-XHP is like a stainless D2 with good toughness and edge retention. The high-quality Spyderco Chaparral series has a number of great little folders. Check out this thread: Spyderco Chaparral Goodness

My Chaparrals (x2) are in S30V, but I do have a kitchen knife on XHP. The 5" petty utility is fantastic. The blade holds an edge and doesn't chip, even when trimming chicken and hitting bones. Edge holding is excellent.

And RamZar, thanks. I've never used D2 though, so I'm not sure what the edge retention is like on XHP. How does it compare to say s30v, Elmax, m390, spyderco s35vn, etc?
BTW, I already saw your thread, but it's good to have a link to it in this one as well, so more people will be redirected to it:thumbup:

I guess with all the other threads on the chap, mine is kinda redundant. But whatever, there's no such thing as too much knife discussion. I just wanted to share my new knife purchase and see if anyone could provide me with info on what I should expect out of the steel

My Manix 2 XHP has been absolutely phenomenal. The only steels (that I own) that I like better are ZDP-189 and CPM-M4.

I've carried my Techno in XHP quite a bit and have only had to touch up the edge once. Holds and edge extremely well. I was pleased as punch when they switched the CF Chaparral to XHP, so I bought one. :D Carrying it today as a matter of fact.

Nice!

And thanks for the info. I'm gonna go on an cutting spree over the next week and edc only the chap to see what kind of edge retention I can get. This task definitely won't feel like work to me;) I love this blade:thumbup:
