After using my new Lil Temperance for a few days, I decided to write up a review. Unfortunately, there won’t be any pictures, partly because I am not a good photographer and partly because I’m too impatient to wait for the pics to upload on my dial up connection.

First Impressions: When I first opened the package and wrapped my hand around the Lil Temp, I loved it. So, not “getting used to it” period was necessary: It was great from the start.

Handle: I find the handle to be absolutely perfect. It feels great in both regular and reverse grip, as well as with the knife sideways in the hand, with my thumb on the side of the handle. It fills the handle nicely, and I find the thickness if good, not to thin, not to bulky.

Blade: I have the “trailing point” model, and even thought I have never handled the “leaf blade” Lil Temp, I think I prefer the trailing point. It comes to a very pointy tip, which I like for cleaning my fingernails, one of my primary knife usages. The blade also has quite a bit of belly, which I like to cutting. The lack of a choil may be disconcerting to some, but I like the fact that the handle ends and the blade begins right away. In fact, the whole ricasso is covered by the handle slabs. I also like the full flat ground CPM 440V blade. I haven’t had a chance to test out edge retention, but the full flat ground cuts like no other.

Clip: I rather like the clip on the Lil Temp. True, it is very visible when in the pocket, but for me, sheeple friendliness is not a high priority. When gripping the handle, the clip actually aids the grip. The three holes press against the fleshy part of the hand before the fingers and make for very secure grip. This is in tip up; I haven’t tried tip down, because I don’t like to carry my knives that way.

Lock: This is my first knife with Spyderco’s Compression Lock, and I really like it. Locks up very solid, with no blade play, and there is no chance of accidental unlocking.

This model has been discontinued by Spyderco, and is coming back with “improvements”. I honestly can’t see how they will improve it, besides making it ambidextrous. When it is re-released, I will definitely be getting one!

Thanks for the review, been looking at this knife for awhile. Here's a pic from NGK:

With different steels also, I believe. The trailing point is 440V, and the leaf is S30V. I could be mistaken though.

Funny you should post this review today. I just brought my Rhino Temp out of storage today for some happy pocket time. It's a great knife, and I agree that there doesn't seem to be much to improve. I sure hope you're right about another production run, though.

AM, I think the first leaf models were 440V also.

I liked the Lil Temp (had one for a short while) but I found it too thick and bulky. Certainly much bulkier than even my Buck Strider Military Folder for the same amount of blade length and thickness.

I'm looking forward to the new version - isn't it meant to be grey Zytel with 3D contours?

Actually, I believe the first Lil Temps produced were in 440V, and the later ones were in S30V. COuld be wrong though.

I hope they dont switch to FRN for the new Lil Temps! I love G10, they cant take away the G10....

Agreed. I can't think of another knife that's so defined by the G10 it uses. I could see an FRN Dodo for the beater crowd but I doubt I'd get an FRN Lil' Temp.

This is correct. I have a 1st edition drop point in 440V.
This is the most solid folder I have. It is a chunky knife, and does not carry as lightly as some others, but it is very sturdy, solid lock-up with zero play, cuts extremely well, handles very securely.
I skipped the S30V edition because I didn't feel like I needed it. I am looking forward to the "improved" version and also hope they keep the G10.
bottom line - Great knife, a little heavy for pocket EDC IMO, but still carry it a lot in the field.
