i don't hear much about the spyderco pro-grip here. I'm thinking about it as an alternative to a native in 440v steel. the pro-grip is in AUS-8. Is this a decent steel. what do ya'll think about the knife in general? thanks.

Actually I'm a pretty big fan of AUS 8 myself. Have it on my old FRN clipped Endura.

Keeps an edge long enough for the type of work it does and it's actually the only steel that I've never had any problems with sharpening over and over again.

I like the blade shape of the pro-grip. One thing I don't like though is the strip of Kraton that they put under the clip. Makes it too 'grippy' on my pockets. Doesn't feel good.

Having said that I do like the Native over the Pro-grip. Better feel to the handle and probably more ergonomically sound overall for me.

what about the aus-8 compared to the 440v? how do they compare in terms of ease of sharpening and edge retention?

AUS-8 is MUCH easier to sharpen, and much easier to get very, very, very sharp. In general, I've also noticed that it rusts far less than 440V, but maybe I just got a good example of AUS-8 and a bad example of 440v.

440V holds an edge much longer, and is not unreasonably hard to get a good working edge on.

I'd take the 8A, unless it's a very hard use knife.

I have several CPM440V bladed knives and never have had a one of them rust. And that is from one who lives in the Washington, DC, area where it is muggy or damp and dreary much of the time. At least it is not salt air.

The Pro Grip is the current version of the old Pro Venator, which is one of the few Spydercos that I actually hated. The Kraton insert in the pocket clip leads to it sticking out so far that it is ALWAYS catching on things and tearing my pocket or bending the clip and the pulling the knife from my pocket. Whle the rest of the knife is great and works very well, that damned kraton filled clip is just a total pain in the *ss.

Oh, yeah, I should probably mention, I live on a brackish river. It's almost bad enough to make aluminum rust.

I haven't had any rust problems with any of the eight or ten AUS-8 blades I've had; had rust problems (one bad, one minor) with my two 440V blades.

Sal Glesser says that the Pro grip is one of their most consistant sellers.I personally really like the knife, although I could also do without the rubber under the clip.
