STR, Any idea how I can properly remove the tail of a Scorpious. Not sure if I should just start filing or not. I don't know where the rear pin is located...I think it may be a thru pin in the lanyard hole. Any help would be appreciated. ft
It has been a while since I've had one of those in the shop for work. I actually owned one for a time. As I recall it has a sleeve in the lanyard that has a flared end on both sides to it so if it is built like some other models and not just Spydercos it can by design kind of act as a pin in the way it works by holding things together in the back to squeeze it in.
On several of those types built that way the lanyard sleeves contribute to the spring holder function by double duty work as a second pin so I'd be hesitant to remove or modify it until you know if it is separate from or part of the make up of the spring holder/rear spacer make up for the lock bar spring.
Once you make note of how many other pins in the spring holder there are if it is connected to the rear spacer or going through the spring holder/rear spacer you can then proceed but only if there are at least two pins besides the lanyard sleeve in the rear spacer spring holder can you dare do this. I can't stress this enough. If its part of the pin set up in the rear don't touch it.
If the lanyard sleeve is going through the spring holder and there are at least two pins besides the sleeve also holding it in there you can most likely remove the entire lanyard with little consequence but if not don't do it beause the spring holder will be forced to move under the tension of the spring and you will no longer have a functioning lockback.
I'd use a belt grinder and keep it cool. You can burn mark that metal if you are not careful so let the belt do the work. Trace a new design where you want to stop using a sharpy and grind to the line and then shape it out in the final steps with a finer belt or by hand. Be sure to make note of the tip of the blade when closed so you don't make the handle too short though.
Thanks for the quick response. I only want to remove the long tail...it looks like a dolphin nose. I would stay far from the lanyard hole. I think the sleeve in the lanyard hole is the only rear connection point (no other pins that I can see). I'll take it slow and let you know. ft
