Just took delivery of a new Spyderco Calypso Jr (SE - VG10). Very sharp. In fact, been bitten already :D

However,

The blade tang does not line up flush with the locking bar. By that I mean that there is a significant "step" (0.8mm - 1mm; estimate) up to the locking bar when the blade is locked open. The blade still locks in position mind you, so it does not look like there are any issues there.

Now, the enclosed leaflet says:
"Each Spyderco product is guarenteed to be free from manufacturing and material defects for a period of one year from the date of your purchase."

Now, my questions are:
(1) What do you all regard as a manufacturing defect?
(2) Do you think that this kind of 'finish' (for want of a better word) should be considered a manufacturing defect?, or as Microsoft sometimes states when it's software goes south: "done by design".

This is NOT a Spyderco "bashing" per se, as oppossed to what you thing constitutes a manufacturing defect. At the same time, I have to say that I was very disappointed by this "quality issue", given the "step" just described as well as the unaligned (slanted) "Japan" stamp on the blade. Especially when I compare it to a previous PE - VG10 Calypso Jr that I bought 2 years ago, which, to a large extent, influenced my decision to purchase this one. Of course, I may be being far too anal here for my own good :o

PS. The Calypso Jr is by and far my favourite Spydie EDC knife. Great ergonomics! Great job by Sal and the rest of the Spyderco company.

If you're talking about the top edge of the blade not lining up with the top edge of the lockbar, then I wouldn't worry about it. My 6+ year old Delica is the same way, never really noticed until today when I dug it out to see if it had that, and it certainly does. Always has worked great though. When I buy a knife in the $50-75 range I can't expect that it will be perfectly flawless, as long as it's funtionally flawless I'm usually pretty pleased.

That being said, I'm guessing if it bothers you Spyderco will probably step up and take care of it. They are a gret company to deal with and stand behind there products very well.

I think that if it troubles you, then at the very least it's worth the phone call to Golden to ask Warranty and Repair. In almost every instrance that I have seen, they'll say, "Send it in and we'll have a look." Spyderco isn't a company that tells people to get lost.

-Ah, but then the question becomes, "Can you live without it for a while?" ;)

I haven't looked, have you posted this question in the Spyderco forum here and at their home forum? That's where you'll really get discussion on this and find out if it's common.

My endura doesnt line up there perfectly, the lock bar is higher than the blade. It has never bothered me, locks up solid.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the input.

I must admit, I never thought about posting it on the Spyderco forum (duh!) ... maybe I'll post a shortened version over there as well. Thanks tortoise
