So I recently picked up a SpydieChef, and I am really enjoying it. However, the detente has become rough, and you can hear the detente ball dragging over the blade. Is this a lubrication issue? I can't see anything physically wrong with the blade or the detente ball.

Is yours CQI version ? I have two , one has strong detention and one has weak detention that I have to bent lock bar to adjust. Bit none of them has the rough as you described.

If pre-CQI, check for a flat spot on the detent ball. I have on several occasions pressed a detent ball out of the lockbar, rotated the flat spot inward, and pressed it back in to fix a worn detent bearing.

This is a CQI version. The issue is that the opening feels rough. However, if I let it sit for a while, the detente "fixes" itself, and smoothes out for a while before becoming rough again.

Interesting, how about de assembly the knife to check the blade face which contact the ball?

It's possible your detent ball is just dragging a bit of grit along with it.

Before doing anything more drastic, stick a little piece of index card between the blade and the ball while the knife is open, and then work the action closed/open once.

That usually cleans off the detent path for me, if there's anything to clean. (Not SpydieChef-specific, but I doubt your issue is specific to that model.)

Good tip. Also a good way to apply some lubricant to the ball - smear some on the index card on the side facing the ball.

I tried using a piece of cardboard to clean the detente path, but the action is still rough. I will probably use something less later. It’s interesting since if I let it sit for a while it smooths up again, and becomes rough after a bit more use. Do you think it’s a lube issue, or should I send it in to Spyderco? I’m trying to see if I can fix it myself, since Spyderco has a long turn over time right now.

I would take it apart in order to examine the detent ball. If there is a flat spot on it, that could be the issue.
