Spydiechef Lockbar Tension

Hello all,

I recently bought a Spyderco Spydiechef, I love the design and look of the knife. It flicks open with pretty decent action but man, closing it feels like a chore and just brings me no joy at all. I have tried loosening the pivot, but the lockbar tension simply knocks the centering way way off. I want this knife to flick open and close well too. Is there any way I might be able to adjust the tension, or am I better off sending it back for a new one? Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Make sure it's broken in before getting too critical of the function. It gets smoother with use. I find that the large cutout access to the lockbar makes it really easy to disengage, and with the lockbar is depressed, mine swings freely. Once the lockbar is released, I close it the rest of the way manually, which feels glassy smooth but not with a drop shut action on its own.

I do not believe that drop shut closure is a metric for a sound knife. You may even argue drop shut closure is a bad thing considering where your fingers go when you're disengaging the lock.

While I enjoy a nice slow blade weight close as much as the next guy, I'm more concerned with deployment than I am closure. I have plenty of very expensive knives that have excellent action out but lethargic action in.

I wouldn't return it, I dont think that is warranted. If anything, sell your perfectly functioning knife on the after market and contact a dealer who is willing to put hands on a knife and check off some criteria for you.

In my experience, Spyderco likes a good bit of lockbar tension on their Taiwan frame locks. Not a problem for me as I would prefer more tension/strong lockup over a blade that will fall shut against the lockbar.
Let it break in a bit and it will smooth out more.

If its anything like my Slysz Bowie its never going to be drop shut free. The Bowie is really smooth but the lockbar tension is to much for drop free.

Sounds like the knife is yours (IE, you won't be returning it to the dealer). With that in mind, have you taken it apart? I have a K2 that had horrible lock stick. Took it apart and with a cleaning, no more lock stick. Same thing happened with a ZT0560 I had. Some time things just need to be reseated.

It has gotten smoother since breaking it in, the lock stick was pretty bad at first but has since gotten less and less. I think I'll just give it time, as I understand that not all knives need to fall shut and that's okay with me

Yes that was the first thing I did, I will probably do it again soon to see if I can be a bit more thorough about it. I think the friction filled action on retraction is what I don't like, but it is beginning to smooth out

I just opened and closed mine a few times. I've had it for a few years now. The closing has resistance but I would term it "hydraulic". I wouldn't really want a frame lock snapping shut without that fluid feel since my thumb is right there on the lockbar.
