Spydiechef Lockup Question

Recently received my Spydiechef.

Upon inspection, the lock-up is not early at all, around 50-60%. This didn't really bother me as it is probably preferably due to the knife's intended uses, but I noticed that I could press the lock bar and have it go completely against the other side, 100%.

Also, I can get to where there is early lock up, but the knife will actually close when I press down. Tho when I open the knife slowly or flick open, it's always rock solid lockup with no play whatsoever. I did some digging and saw some other people's Spydiechef's were in worst shape.

Guess I'm wondering, is this normal? I tried pressing the lock bar on my techno and it didn't budge, along with being at an early lock up for years now. Thanks for your help, hopefully I'm just overthinking this.

Guess after more digging, I see that this is quite normal and most of these are the same. Will just break it in. Thanks!

Hey Unbroken. I had really nervous about the lateness of the lockup on my Slysz Bowie (another Slysz design) but as I read about it I stopped worrying. I've had the Bowie for a couple years now and haven't had any problems!

Mine was exactly the same as you described. If I'd barely open it it would look like it was locked in place but would close on your hand. Now that I've carried and used it for a couple months it is rock solid if I flick it open or barely open it and engage the lock. I'd just use it and let it break in. It is a superb knife and I love it!

The lock up might not be as late as it looks. If you check the scratch mark on the blade tang (actual contact between the blade and the lock bar), it might indicate that the lock up is little earlier.
Mine looks like 80% from the lock bar position, but the scratch mark tells it may be around 60~70%.

Anyway, as others said, the "secure" lock up of Slysz knives is only a good thing to me.

What Miso said is correct. I noticed that mine locked up quite late new...especially if I pushed it over with my thumb. It looked like it pushed over to about 90% but upon inspecting it with a 10x loupe, I saw that the way the lockbar is cut, it engages earlier than it appears. What I thought was 90% is really about 70%. I've been using it daily for months now and lockup is still rock solid and hasn't creeped over any further. I know it's hard not to obsess sometimes...especially when the internet tells you you're supposed to, haha, but I think the design and lockup is made this way and works just fine.

Mine goes a good 10% deeper than yours Miso. Yours looks like about 65% or so and mine is probably 75-80%. That's only if I push it over with my thumb though. I've used the knife hard for months now though and it hasn't changed any so I don't expect to have any issues with it.

The lock up of Spydiechef gives a similar feeling of Sebenza's, late and secure.
I guess it is also quite stable as Sebenza's lock up, as yours stays where it was even after your hard use in salty environments.
Good to hear.
Thanks, Surfingringo!

Mine is also very late, near 90%. I can actually force it until the detent ball contacts the opposite scale. This is the latest lockup on any framelock I've ever owned.

I'm not very pleased that it is already at this late of lockup on a knife that's a couple months old. Also I had the blade contact a standoff (maybe this is called lash?) when I dropped it. Dented the blade up near the tip.

So dented blade, super late lockup, but I still love it. I'm sure they will make some adjustment to future runs because it does look like all the earliest ones out have had very late lockup. Hard not buy a new knife when it first comes out, but it seems to be more reasonable to watch how those first blades come out before jumping to buy one...

That doesn't sound right to me. The late lock up may be a feature of the knife, but you should not be able to push the lock bar to the other side.
Does it exhibit any blade play? It would indicate a loose pivot.
Otherwise it might be a defect, and you may want to send it to Golden for adjustment.

Mine is about 75%, it has never moved.

Somewhere on here there are disassembly pics of a CQI model with the ceramic detent ball, it appeared also that the lock bar interface has been carbidized. LC isn’t a particularly hard steel and has minimal carbides or nitrides so shearing effect on the titanium probably isn’t as bad as the hard PM steels, hence no need for an insert.
