Know I've been askin allot of questions here lately, but I was hoping to get some opinions on the spyderco atr. Any opinions on the lock in perticular, but also on the overall knife itself. To me it looks like it would be a great work knife. I was considering the military, but the atr just seem signifigantly tougher, especialy the tip. -Thanks for the help once again.

Kinda like a frame-lock, except the lock is at the top portion of the blade at the pivot point making it more secure. Very smooth lock. By the way it's called a compression lock. If you do a search on the ATR you will see that is has had very good reviews. I recommend the Ti.

that knife is freakin awesome and I wish I had never sold my PE titanium model that I got when the knife first came out. They're so hard to find now! The SS version is of course still good, but get a titanium one if you can find it!

I forgot to bid on a new Ti one on ebay a few weeks ago and I am kicking myself ever since. Sold for $125!!!

I paid $200 for a new Ti ATR in plain edge and it is worth every bit of that. It carries very lightly for a knife of that size and handles very, very well. I really like the blade shape and the shape of the hilt. It is one of the only large Spydies with metal scales that I do like. All of those holes do make for a more secure grip when your hand gets sweaty or wet with other subsances as well as allowing the martial artists to do their grip changes securely. It is a great knife, almost up to my all-time Spydie love, the StarMate.

All I will say is to try the Compression lock out before you buy a knife with it. A lot of people really like it, but I and many others do not.

The lock is very strong, but I do not like the fact that it must be flicked closed in order to close it one-handed. I find it *feels ugly* to close (one-handed or two), and looks even worse. I consider a halfspine backlock to be just as strong, better looking, and to feel nicer to close two handed and just as easy to flick closed with one.

But this is just me. The Compression lock does have its fans. But when I was looking at the Ti ATR, and probably going to buy one site unseen, I am glad that I got to handle one first because I really don't like the lock.

Our opinions on the lock should not sway you (good or bad). I dislike the lock because of VERY subjective reasons: looks and feel. You have to see and use the lock to judge for yourself.

Conversely, I love the Compression Lock and find it rather easier to use than the Ball Bearing Lock or some of the Frame Locks.

It has the cobra hood feature which makes it easier to open the knife. Maybe it's just me, but I find that feature ugly. I also wonder about the necessity of it, especially on Spydercos since the round hole is the easiest to use and reliable of the one handed opening methods.

i have 2 Ti ATR's and a SS ATR and imho the Ti ATR is the best spyderco around, one of the best knives around period imho, i carry either a Ti ATR PE or a emerson specwar custom CQC8. the SS isnt bad but the Ti is better.

i highly reccomend them.

I own several Spydercos (Endura II, Police, Military, Chinook I, Hunter, Starmate, Calypso Sr., Dodo, etc...) and went to pick up a Ti ATR last year at a gunshow. After handling the knife, I found that I had no interest in buying it! The lock did not appeal to me, as well as the cut-outs in the scales, nor did the folded sheetmetal clip, which looked like something on a $5 made-in-China POS. The Cobra Hood is interesting and something I'd like to see as a removable option on other models. I ended up buying a D'Allara and a Dodo instead.
