first let me say that i found 2 great shareware spyware programs.....spybot search and destroy....and.......spy doctor (either 1 or 2 words). they work better than the ones you buy.......Mcaffee stinks!

now my problem: have a spy program called pingnet that i found but i can't delete it.....it keeps saying access denied....checked its properties and it isn't read only...tried every which way to force a delete but i can't delete it

anyone know how to force a delete in XP?

thanks in advance.........Bill

If you can find the folder its in, make sure that there aren't any hidden files. (under view). There might be another one in there that goes with it thats preventing you from deleting it.
You might try changing the name of the file. Double click slowly on the name under the icon, then make it "s#it" or something and see if it will go away.
Other than that I can't help ya

Bill sent me an email and shortly his problems will all but disappear. :D

Just a quick note.

PingNet is a program put out by Frogsoft. It pings a range of IP addresses and creates a list of the addresses that responded, including the hostname if available. Great if you need to know what IP's are available on your network. The problem is that it is difficult to remove.

Try this:

Go into Safe Mode on your PC.

Go to the Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs> Check to see if PingNet is listed and remove it. If not then the spy scanners are picking up the registry keys.

Run a virus scan and run all of the programs I gave you.

Reboot.

You also need to remove the registry files. Use this program: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download460.html

Install it and run it. Go to Tools>Registry Cleanup> Do them all. Be sure to click on "Create one backup file" before you start.

I used to use McAfee Shredder for those pesky files that couldn't be deleted by normal methods. It usually works and gives a real sense of satisfaction when you can know that it's totally deleted with no trace.

thank you all for the valuable advice.........ESPECIALLY KV

all my problems are solved (for now)

i think i'll restrict my internet use to the office and keep my home pc offline except for email and powerline blog!

again..............Thanks

Bill

Glad to here your problems have been solved. If you run Adaware and Spybot once a week you'll greatly reduce your spyware.adware problems. Also check out Spyware Blaster. This is another cool free program that works very well. You can "lock" your homepage so it can't be hijacked as well as scan for spy/adware.

I forgot to mention that Spybot S&D also has an option to "lock" your homepage and protect it from hijacks. So if you use that already you don't need to use Spyware Blaster.
