I'm beginning to get interested in this knifesmithing stuff. Is there a definitive guide to the types and numbering codes for carbon and stainless steels suited for knife blades. What about physical properties and heat treating?
I guess what I'm looking for is the "Big Book of Knifesmithing".
I'd be willing to pay extra for a compass that would point me in the right direction.
Thanks,
Bob

Check out some of these knife articles
Next, go to Engnath.com and read and re-read what is there. To get a lesson in some of the different damascus patterns, check out Jim Hrisoulas' site.

To get a specific spec for certain heat treat needs, try Crucible.

If you are interested in forging or building a forge, check out Don Fogg Knives

There are quite few books out there that are good information as far as knifemaking is concerned. Some are:

Step by Step Knifemaking by David Boye
How to Make Knives by Richard Barney and Bob Loveless
The Complete Bladesmith by Jim Hrisoulas is a good overview into forging if that is your desire.

This forum is one the best places for information as well. Do not hessitate to ask questions. We all started somewhere.
