Square handle vs. Rounded handle on 110s

Which do you prefer and why?

The reason I ask is because I've owned and used the same 112 since 1973. Due to all the bad influence I've received on this forum, I have decided to buy my first 110. I'm going to find and buy a "dot" knife in mint condition. I just can't decide if I want another square handle, which I like, or if I should try a rounded handle, which look nice too. Any thoughts?

Thanks! :)

I like the older "square" ones because it shows right away it is old. I also have squared off 110s and 112s with new blades by Buck.

I went ahead and sent Jerad,"Jag custom knives"a brand new 2 dot in the box,and asked him to round off the bolsters like the newer style, let me tell ya it looks and feels great in my hands,I love it!

I prefer the older style 110 with the squared handles. Most likely because that's what I used for so many years I guess. It just feels right to me.

These days I carry a 2011 110 and find that I don't even think about the squared handles...that is until I pick one up with a squared handle and hold it. I like that stocky feel.

Thanks for all the replies so far. There were other changes taking place during the time I am interested in (1981-1985). Steel went from 440C to 425M and I believe Buck went to a full hollow grind as well. Any additional thoughts on these changes?

I like softened bolsters and took my down with a file. Much better in the hand but YMMV.

I like the old 440c. 425m is ok and I like the 420hc just fine. But the 440c is more pleasing to me.

The shape of the blade tips has changed. The tips have gotten fuller. I like the 112 blade shape a lot better than the 110. Just too little tip for my taste. Wish a drop point was readily available.

I like both frames. The 3 dot brought us the Full hollow grind on a 110 and later finger grooves arrived. I like both these features. DM

I have a real soft spot for the square frames, my first Buck was a two dot 112. There is just something about the square frames that feels good to my hand. I also like them rounded off as well, for the 112 especially, they are easier on the pocket. Its best to have at least one of each:)

I am right there with you, Brother!

The older square frames were distinctive and a BUCK hallmark feature I liked very much. When the newer rounded bolster was introduced I balked ever so briefly and swallowed my pride when I bough a new 110. I really like the smooth bolsters, ingress and egress into the pocket or sheath, classic architecture, forever quality. Sometimes change is good, and this was a minor mod that didn't really bother anything. Square means old, round means new. Gotta love them 110s in any form!

Well you guys weren't any help. Half of you like squared and half of you like rounded. :p :D

Thanks for all the comments.

I carried a 112 in the 70's and now I have a new 110 to replace it and I was just thinking today how slimmer the handle is on the 110 and thought maybe because of the roundness. Not sure if the handle on 112 is bigger round then the 110 but I wish the 110 was a bit fatter for better gripping.

I can understand the nostalgia of the square frame, but I don't like the looks of it nor the functionality. Although I carry a 501 all the time I'm about to round it just a little, at least on the ends, as it has a tendancy to put a hole in my jeans, so that's my next "to do".

That's the first I've heard someone wanting the 110 fatter. Find you one in stag it might be a little fatter.

I just saw a chinese knock off of the 110 today in the parts store for $6, and notice it was slimmer and actually prefered the look of it that way.

I always love seeing your pocket melted slimmed down 110s/112s, sitflyer. Taking the rounded handle to new extremes =P

There is something to be said for the squared off look. It definitely looks more old timey and classic. However, I would guess that I wouldn't like the squared off version very much in hand (guessing because I've never actually seen one in person or handled one). I don't like it when the edges of a knife handle dig into my fingers when I grip tightly, and so I favor knives with rounded/beveled handle edges.
