Square Wheel Grinder Platen Wheels?

I've had a Square Wheel Grinder for a little while now and finally found a platen frame for what I thought was a reasonable price. It was just the platen frame with the axles, and now I'm trying to find contact wheels for it that are reasonably priced.

Wilton will sell me the two wheels for $250.00, plus shipping. IMHO that's more than a little steep, as it's nearly half the price I paid for the grinder.

Any help finding a supplier for these will be greatly appreciated.

Keith,

I contacted Rob about these around a week ago, and he replied that they don't make them for the Square Wheel Grinder Platen. The Wheel hub needs an offset to match the axle set up on the Platen that is unique to Square Wheel Grinders. He said he had looked into this before and it just wasn't something they were go to do.

ok, I thought that it was one of those things that you could modify to put on any grinder

Hi Friend,

I don't really understand what is meant by a hub offset, but, if you haven't already, you might want to check in with www.sunray-inc.com. They are reasonably priced and may have, or be able to do, what you need.

Good luck, Phil

Hey Keith and Phil,

Thanks for your input.

I've just received some valuable information from Ed Caffrey tonight about the proprietary set up Wilton has for their platen axles. I double checked the info he e-mailed me. I'm going to go with the plans for one of his Caffrey platens, as it was designed for use with either the Square Wheel Grinder or a modified KMG tool arm.

I've dealt with Shane at Sunray before, so I'll be ordering the contact wheels from them.

Thanks again for your valuable input :D

Yeah, unless I'm mistaken, I think the square wheel contact wheels move when you turn the axle screw. Kind of the opposite to a Bader style where the platen moves in or out to square up to the contact wheels(idler wheels). I just made a platen attachment with contact wheels patterned off the square wheel type but with a movable platen and set contact wheels. Along the same lines as the Caffrey platen.

The wheels on the square wheel platen do move in an eccentric revolution
I've got 2 of them and they both operate that way.
Ken
