SquareSpace and Stripe, a warning.

While this may best go in another part of the forum, I thought I'd post it here as many of us do this for at least part, if not all of our income. And most of us rely on the Internet for retail and advertising.
Be aware, Stripe, who at the moment are the only integrated e-commerce function of SquareSpace, have chosen to state that ALL knives, including kitchen, craft, and boxcutters are 'weapons' and therefore prohibited from utilizing their services.

I will skip all my personal feelings about this, and leave it to each to decide how they feel about this, but will state the following as I have to them. Knives are not by definition alone weapons. And it is their duty to follow legal precedent. In so doing, they must concede knives are only termed weapons in instances where concealed carry is addressed or when used in a crime. Typically only ballistic knives and such are termed as weapons without any further mitigating factor.

Be aware, and don't do what we did and spend three weeks building a comprehensive new site on their servers just to be told they won't support you after you go live. There is no fair warning, and in my opinion no reason why anyone would think this would be the case.

Cheers.

Hmmm?

Sorry hear about your waste of time, money & effort.
is this SquareSpace part of Square Card reader?

I suggest 3DCart. We've been with them a long time and have been very happy. Facecrack did the same to us when we tried to boost our posts with them. According to them all knives are weapons.

SquareSpace is just a website building and hosting platform. And not associated with the Square credit card processing service. As far as I know at least...

To be fair, if all you want is an artist's page with photos and promotional material, as well as a way to contact you for further service or something, SquareSpace can do that, and makes no distinctions between types of businesses. In that, at least, they don't violate your First Amendment rights... Just don't ever plan to use their e-commerce functions of you plan on selling knives or have the word 'Knife' somewhere in your name.

It is Stripe that is honestly the real sticker. I hold SquareSpace accountable because they make no mention of the fact Stripe is the sole option for integrated payment and inventory control. And have to assume sine SquareSpace is fairly new they must have blindly signed some exclusivity clause with Stripe for some arbitrary time period. Stripe is the real discriminatory party here. They push their liberal agenda full force into the world prohibiting anything that might be in the least bit questionable or offensive to even one single person by limiting the types of businesses that they will accommodate. Even so far as to limit it by name alone. As we had not even put the first edged item up for sale. The presumption we would be selling knives was enough....

Basically, with Stripe, you can sell clothes. And I'd bet anything they consider improper is out of the question too... Lol. Oh no, watch out, the guy selling the 'I'm with Stupid ---->' shirts is out to get us!!

You're right Eric they are not associated with Square. I checked. Cause we use Square at shows all the time and bought some stock when they went public. So I was curious.

Good to know. We don't have a brick and mortar yet... Soon, but not yet. So we want to hit some of the local shows as well. More for a line of non-white stuff I carry now, but for my stuff too. And wanted a way to take payment and were looking at Square. We use the PayPal thingy now, but some people seem to be scared of PayPal, and it doesn't feel nearly as professional...

:O Thanks for the warning! I cant believe that crap. I use squarespace/stripe for my other business and was just starting to set up my site for knives. I guess I'll have to look elsewhere. That sucks too, squarespace is the simple website builder to beat.

I just read through their terms. I never realized it was such a limited platform. Regardless of the categorization as a weapon, knives would be prohibited because age-restricted goods are prohibited.

https://stripe.com/us/prohibited-businesses

"Marijuana dispensaries and related businesses; sale of tobacco, e-cigarettes, and e-liquid; online pharmacies; age restricted goods or services; weapons and munitions; gunpowder and other explosives; fireworks and related goods; toxic, flammable, and radioactive materials; products and services with varying legal status on a state-by-state basis"
