does anyone have any tips or tricks on squaring the shoulders on an integral bolster? i can't seem to get close enough with any file i can find... tried an end mill but it wasent of very good quality. if an end mill is the answer whats the best type i can buy? thanks for your help

yeah i tried the file but i can't square em up at all..... any info on the best end mill i can get for getting a nice square shoulder? not worried about price i'm sure the results will pay for itself. i know george is already shooting down my little stubby pocketknife.... he's just sad cause his is too skinny

HammerHead, it is over a 1/4" thick and only 2" long. You should use it as a sinker and not a knife.

Yeah the end mill is the answer. I like 4 flute carbide but HHS will work fine. A dove tail end mill would be cool.

IG sounds a little jealous:D

you're right bruce... he's just mad because his isn't as thick as mine.... but he's the teacher... he's there to give out the constructive criticism.... or be jealous... i mix those two up now and then.... so can i get a little more specifics on te type of end mill that would be best bruce? i know little to nothing about end mills. thank again guys... no thanks to you IG

HH: Bowies aren't even made that thick. Well at least it matches your head THICK.  :p :D
Bruce: I am kind of jealous he bet me in the making of a sinker or was it stinker??

Stinker, lmao!!!

Hammertime, you free hand filing or are you using some kind of a jig/ filing guide??

Only rich people have mills. I use files with a safe edge for such filing. I also know all the right cuss words to finally get a square fit, an imporant aquired skill, the cussing. I have thought about 'glassing a square piece of stock on the unused top of the file, squared with the safe edge. It would turn your flat file into a L shaped file tool with a large safe surface and guide. Foolproof?

Perhaps you could put longer bolts in your filing jig so it'll fit? Or make some hardened "L" shaped pieces, put them in your vise and use it as a filing jig?

I'm planning an integral in the near future so I've been thinking along the same lines.

Yeah He is jealous for sure. If you have a mill just buy any four flute end mill but if you dont own or have access to one Badbamaump has a good plan.

Post a pic when done.

well i do have access to a milling machine if i plan on ever talking to IG again. so i figure today i'll go grab a 4flute carbide end mill... and if that doesn't squar it up i think i'll go for J. Andrews methods... i tried them yesterday but i stayed away from the big bad words.... IG started to blush he's a big baby

Anybody interested in forging integrals may want to check out the integral tutorial on www.taigoo.com

Here's one of Tai's latest integrals:

I figured that trying to work in the high concentration of "fartigens" would be the hardest thing about working in IG's shop? :barf: :p
