I have had the 4.1 now for over a year and use it in the kitchen for cutting whole chickens up and batoning through tough squash such as spaghetti squash. Problem is the 4.1 is just too short to use the batoning method effectively.
What do you suggest as a kitchen mate to my 4.1 for the kitchen tasks that I require?

How large in diameter? Personally the 4.5 would be large enough for my kitchen task. With the thinner blade it will be much more efficient in the kitchen too, IMHO. If your using it for batoning wood for fires to cook I would say a 5.1,6,or even an 8 (if your feeding an army!) would suffice to build any fire or even a new kitchen in the woods.

I think 6" dia would be max. The 4.5 is only about 1/8" longer than the 4.1 though, so I don't know if I would really gain anything. The thinner blade is an attraction. I have to re read the production schedule because it looks like I could be waiting a number of months...but I'm not clear about that.

You are asking advice on a kitchen mate ? I think this is not the place...
Sorry. I'm not understanding your response. I have a Survive! 4.1 which I really like. I want another Survive! knife. Why wouldn't this be the place to seek suggestions? I didn't mention other kitchen knives I have because they are not my concern, and if they were, you're right, "this is not the place." Maybe you misunderstand "kitchen mate." I mean another Survive! knife to compliment my 4.1, not a cooking companion...if that's what you thought.

There is no date set in stone. If around a six inch diameter is what your seeking might I suggest the gso 6 or even the 7/7. Both would be an excellent companion to a 4.1. I personally went for a 7/7 and a 3.5 on my preorder and will also be getting a 4.5. I figure the 7/7 and 4.5 will compliment each other in the woods for any small task. Especially paired with a folding saw and a small ax. The 3.5 I got just for an edc cause its sexy :)

Tex gave some good advice. I was thinking a 7/7 might be big enough to cover all lengths of squash, but if you don't want anything bigger than 6 inches then I'd say the GSO 6 is your answer.

And yeah, anything other than the new 5.1 is going to be a matter of months. Check the production schedule to see the order. The former starter models are put in an order and the process has started for those. Sadly for the 6 and some others, they haven't been started yet and an order needs to be determined. They're worth the wait!

That last part gave me a really good laugh with my coffee this morning!

Thank you Tt for your insight. I'll check out the 6 & 7/7. I know that these knives are all great for the outdoors experience that I once enthusiastically did, but now kitchen hacking & prep is my limit. Since I can convince my wife that I need bush whacking knives to eviscerate fowl and force fit it into a kettle, and split squash lengthwise, I'll get a couple of "kitchen helpers" a.k.a. Survive!, to make my job easier.;)

Also, thank you for your advise SN.
I am glad that I could help you with your coffee this morning.:)

GSO 12... When you want to baton through a squash, the cutting board and your counter top.
