Squeaky 0561?

Hi all,

Just got my 0561 today and I noticed that it has a squeaky tone when opening/closing it slowly (i.e. grabbing the blade between my fingers and opening slowly rather than using the flipper or studs). It is like the tone when you have a slightly moistened pad of your finger and you rub it around the rim of a wine glass. Is this normal? Should I oil it? I have opened/closed the knife with the flipper about 100 times now and it's still there...

Also, I noticed that when closed, the lockbar can be pushed in ever so slightly and it then stays in that position. After doing this, the knife is a lot more difficult to open with the flipper or studs. It seems like the detent ball is either being pushed slightly into the lockbar, or pushed slightly into the blade, hence the stiffer opening. Is this normal? Will it work itself out with break-in?

Thanks all for your input! Just looking to learn about this knife as I've read they can be tough to open at first.

Oil is pretty thin and may not last for the noise your hearing. I prefer grease in these types of knives. I like to just take a q-tip and dip it in some white lithium grease and when you pull the q tip out there will be grease on the end and it will form a point like if you were putting tooth paste on a brush and curve the little end of it over. That little point of grease I put right into the detent hole in the blade so that everytime the detent ball gos into the hole in the blade it grabs a tiny bit of the grease and keeps the blade lubricated for opening. What your hearing is exactly as you say the harmonic vibration occuring from the Detent ball rubbing the blade.

As for your lockbar questions yes is is normal that if you apply force to the lockbar that the detent ball will go into the blade more. The grease will prevent it from sticking too much. But under most circumstances what you are experiencing will happen more with purposeful manipulation like you are doing rather than it naturally occurring with pocket time.

I would be very surprised if the issue was not remedied with a simple oiling of the pivot.

It's just not broke in yet, man. I promise. One of mine did the same thing at first. Keep flippin'. It will smooth out and the lockbar won't do that anymore. The squeak will go away too.

The noise is the lockbar riding along the blade. Both my 0560 and Tilt do this (the Tilt is much worse). It should go away with more break-in as the detent wears the metal smooth.

I squirted some Teflon dry wax lubricant into the pivot area. The little horn went quiet.

As said above, it's just the detent ball wearing a groove into the steel (which it is supposed to do). Once it has worn in correctly the squeaking will stop. :)

Thanks everyone! After about 300 flips open now, the squeaking is virtually nonexistent. The lockbar can still be pushed in slightly when closed, causing flipping open to be much harder, but maybe that will clear up in time also.
