My BM 42 seems to be very squeaky, and i was wondering if there is a special lube of some kind that is known to work especially well with these knives. On the other hand, maybe i just shouldnt worry about it?!?! Any suggestions? THanks for your help.

Yep the best thing to use on the joints of the 42 (or any other Bali) is militec-1. Most people would say its the best way to. It can be found here:
http://www.militec-1.com/

The 1oz. bottle might see a bit expensive but it will last a long time and actually comes (is shipped) pretty fast. This stuff lasts a long time i think I remember clay saying that he got 2 to 3 weeks off of one treatment (4 drops worth) so the bottle lasts a long time)

If you decide to get it (which I highly recommend -- its the best) what you will want to do is:

Lightly heat the joints with a hair dryer (makes the joints more permeable by the lube), then apply 4 drops of militec-1 and get it into the joints (2 joints both sides of blade) -- rub the excess off -- "work" the lube in a bit -- and let it sit for a while. Probably for the first treatment you might want to loosen the hex heads of the 42 so that for the first treatment the lube will get very well get more saturated into the joints. (after the first time its not necessary to keep doing this I don't think)

Hope that helps - and it made some sense - its late

Try "Finish Line" it's sold in high end bicycle shops. $3.95 for my 2 oz bottle. It's a hi-Tech dry formula with Teflon + Trilinium.

"sets up dry and clean, unequualed lubricity, quiets noisy chains, improves shifting" "-65 deg - +500 deg" Penitrates and quickly drys.

It's the best stuff I have EVER used for a bike chain. I also use it on all my folders and flippers.

I have also found that peanut-butter has some interesting lube properties. (see my other "lube" post for more ideas)

The last few 42s that I've received have been a bit tight. Aside from lubrication with Militec-1 as previously described, I found that you really do need to adjust those screws. Depending on the age of your 42, you'll need either a T-10 or a T-8 Torx driver. These are available at automotive and home stores.

Thanks for the help guys!!

I just happened to have a torx wrench around, and decided to mess with the tightness of the screws. when i went to loosen, they just loosened right up. i was suprised at how little effort it took, and at any point looser than it had been, seemed almost too loose, as though it might become even looser on its own during manipulation. Is this normal?

And while i have your attention, i noticed that the tang pin is just a tad loose. When pushing it from side to side, you can just barely hear it click..its not bad at all, but i remembered reading that they have been know to come out, and was wondering if i should take this as an early warning sign.

Thanks for everyones' help..

I would definitely recommend Militec-1, its great stuff!!! (on all knives) I Have been using if on Balis for some time and just recently started using in on regular folders.

I don't exactly know what you are asking on the pins and the Tang. You should maybe talk to chuck about the tang pin (either ways its under warranty) If you are worried about the pins falling out - I don't think you have to worry about the blade flying because the pins are pressure fit. If I was you I would not keep the screws too lose though.

Just wanted to say i finally got a bottle of militec-1 and this stuff is incredible!! i would deffinatley recommend it to anyone and everyone. Not only gets rid of the squeeky noise, but the bali feels unbelievably smooth. Thanks for the advice everyone!

You'll likely have to go through the Militec-1 ritual several times in the coming week or two. Don't worry. This is normal. Each treatment will last longer and longer until finally you'll get several weeks between treatments. Just remember to heat the joints up a bit perhaps with a hairdryer. (Don't worry about ruining the blade. You're not gonna get it anywhere near that hot with a hairdryer.) Work the Militec-1 into the joint and then just let it sit overnight before cleaning off any excess.

Oh, and don't ever use this stuff on any of your other folding knives, because if you do, you'll end up having to buy the big bottle
