I have been using my .22 Ruger MkIII for all my small game hunting this season and last. I just found a new spot to shoot them around a great set of white oaks that are dropping a ton of acorns. It's in Tuckahoe St park on the eastern shore in Md and I think it may be my new favorite squirrel spot. I was deer hunting there and saw a ton of squirrels coming right up to my stand so I came back today with my pistol. I got four in less than two hours!
They literally came right in to me as if they have never been hunted! I think the small game hunting pressure there must be very low. I shot the one on the far right in the head at about 15 yards and then the one on the left started barking at me from the tree I was sitting under! I had a clear shot with the trunk as a backstop so the shot was safe, took him through the chest. Three headshots and one in the heart! This was one of my best squirrel days ever, certainly the best so far this season.

Nice rig. I have a slab sided target ruger that I use with a red dot. Had a scope on it at first and didn't like it. Lots of fun squirrel hunting with a pistol. I first started out with a Colt Woodsman that I retired for no reason other than the Ruger came my way. Good way to practice is with a Crosman pump pistol to get used to pistol shooting. At least it works for me. Practice in the garage. Nice shooting. Went squirrel hunting yesterday with my Savage 24 22/20 combo gun. Took 4 with the 22.

Handgun hunting squirrels especially with iron sights is fun and challenging. I did it once after I had tuned up my friends 8" K-22 which made it much easier !! Normally I use my old Browning Challenger.

Good shooting. I have a MarkII with open sights. It would be quite a challenge for me to get one let alone several.

Thanks guys! I usually only get one squirrel when I go with my pistol and many times I come back empty handed. I Really like this spot in the park where I shot these guys. I'm actually going back tomorrow afternoon and can't decide on my pistol for squirrel and my bow for deer. I can't believe that I'm having this much fun plunking squirrels. I have the four tail drying right now after I dyed them for fly tying.

Good shooting 'Ol Bud & nice pistol ! I have the MKII ss Target model w/ 5"barrel. I don't eat tree rats anymore, I ate plenty of these guy's growing up & have now lost the taste for 'em so I don't hunt them anymore :o

Sweet rig!! I had MK I bull bbl. that I put an old Optima 2000 on (first of the holo sights, looked like the burris Fastfire) Hooo it was a fast sighting rig. That one is on my "life's regrets" list as I sold her off a while ago. I'll bet she's as accurate and fast as she is beautiful:thumbup: Thanks for the pics!
