I have been using my .22 Ruger MkIII for all my small game hunting this season and last. I just found a new spot to shoot them around a great set of white oaks that are dropping a ton of acorns. It's in Tuckahoe St park on the eastern shore in Md and I think it may be my new favorite squirrel spot. I was deer hunting there and saw a ton of squirrels coming right up to my stand so I came back today with my pistol. I got four in less than two hours!
They literally came right in to me as if they have never been hunted! I think the small game hunting pressure there must be very low. I shot the one on the far right in the head at about 15 yards and then the one on the left started barking at me from the tree I was sitting under! I had a clear shot with the trunk as a backstop so the shot was safe, took him through the chest. Three headshots and one in the heart! This was one of my best squirrel days ever, certainly the best so far this season.
