I thought you were talking about the other type of smashed kitten, the kind that made my wife weep!

but the pics were more pleasant than I was expecting.

You about had me coming in here with an attitude, but now ya got me lolz!! "Squished kitten" LOL, Mashed Cat... Funny!! Nice D-guards! :D:thumbup:

Not sure what that black oxide is, but I'm guessing it's a decarb layer from heat treating. My CG FBM blade has a pretty thick layer of it (well... like paper thick, but it's a bear to remove) and I've about given up trying to take it off in one go. I say it's a probably a decarb layer because it isn't as stainless as normal infi is, it will rust rather easily but it isn't deep, just surface staining. Hitting it with my scotchbrite wheel turned it a silvery grey color, but you can tell from the few spots where bright white infi is peeking though that it's not been removed. Hitting it with gun blue will blacken the grey layer, white infi is unaffected.

You could have put your other ASH in that pic, you know the one :p

I think I would sand the SAR if I were you, then again I'm not and would probobally leave it.

Thanks for the pics:thumbup:

Those D guards are pretty cool.

The Sar5 looks sweet IMO, I'd leave it.

Thanks for sharing

ive seen this on a few busses ive stripped. all the tan or desert camo ones ive owned had this black "layer" underneath the coating.

this is the first time ive seen it under a coating other than tan.

i think ill leave it. at least for now. i dont have a belt sander or any other tools to remove it efficiently anyway.

I was going to call Animal PD on you until I opened up the thread :D Very cool stuff for sure. Mashed Kitty came up with a superb idea for those things

try mother's mag polish.....will take a while, but work on it while watching tv....after a few days, you will have a very nice finish.....

great thing about mother's is that it removes as little metal as possible when polishing the blade....also, blet sanders and sandpaper often leave very fine scratches that are impossible to remove.....mother's polish does not do that....

i usually use mothers or flitz. one problem is, without removing the scales, there will be coated spots near the ends.

If it's anything like the decarb layer on my battle mistress, no chance. I think I have about 15 minutes worth of 1000rpm maroon scotchbrite wheel time on it, and it's only just starting to show bright infi in small spots. It actually looks pretty nice, sensitivity to rust aside.

well, i started with the mothers. good god my elbows hurt!!!

looking like a comp finish. its not quite as dull as in the pics.
