SR-1 or wait for the spyderco version?

I find myself REALLY wanting an SR-1, and the orange version in aluminum seams reasonable. They are pretty new to me, so any thoughts on aluminum vs Ti vs waiting for the spyderco colab? I love titanium, but the price on the aluminum is a bit more in my range.

If you see my post, down a couple from this one, you know how I feel about the SR-1, LOVE IT! I think you should go for it as the Lion Steels are constructed using the monoblock handle's, while the Spyderco will be built with two handle halves. Nothing wrong with that, it's just that the monoblock method is only being done by Lionsteel on the SR-1, and SR-1A, and is very unique, not to mention STRONG!

I haven't handled the aluminum model, but I do like the vibrant colors I've seen it in. It uses the same steel insert on the lock as the titanium model does, and from what I've read, it locks up just as tight as the titanium version.

My big reason I would pick the Lionsteel over the LionSpy is the construction method as I simply detest the new fad of using titanium for one handle, and G-10, or other, for the opposite handle.

If you could save for the titanium SR-1, you would find an awesome knife in your pocket!!

Thanks for the advice, to be honest even the aluminum version is a stretch on my budget but I might be able to make something work.

I'm new to this forum and didn't know of Spyderco putting out an aluminum version of the SR-1. Any links to pictures and of course prices. I like the Ti SR-1 but really don't get the roto block system. I realize what Lionsteel says about it but are there test of it in use? Ever been stabbed, spine whacked - overstrikes?

Thanks....:D

It's Lionsteel who make the aluminum SR1. The spyderco SR1(lionspy) is ti and G10. I couldn't see the SR1 giving in to spine whacking even with the roto turned off. Not trying it on mine though.:D

I'm also thinking the SR-1 would not be fazed by spine whacking. You can screw the Roto-Block over and keep the lock arm from moving over to the right, and I just don't see spine whacking being a problem. That said, I don't spine whack my knives.......I spine-tap them. I will tap them against a solid surface, covered by a washcloth, or similar, and do 5 to 7 rapid taps. Been my experience that the rapid on/off pressure will usually make the lock move left if it is going too. I have spine-tapped my SR-1, without the roto block screwed over and it passed with no problem.

Thanks, I found it (lion Spy). I like the SR-1 better but that's just me. Good to hear that they're like a rock. Solid Ti if I'm not mistaken and very traditional, rugger look about them other than being a bit too shiny. :D
